University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine: Finding a Native American Dentist is Rare, UB Dental Program Aims to Change That
Nearly 10,500 students applied to attend dental school in the United States this fall. Just 16 of those students are Native American, according to the American Dental Education Association. The Native American Pre-Dental Student Gateway Program, an initiative between the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and Seneca Nation Health System, aims to reduce the alarming disparity by introducing Native American students to careers in dentistry.

NYU College of Dentistry: Lancet Series on Oral Health, Co-Authored by NYU Dentistry's Habib Benzian, Calls for "Radical Reform" of Oral Healthcare
A special Lancet Series on Oral Health, published today in The Lancet, presents an "urgent need for radical reform" of oral healthcare to prioritize prevention and integrate dentistry into primary care. The series is comprised of two papers, both co-authored by Habib Benzian, DDS, MScDPH, PhD, the associate director of global health and policy for NYU College of Dentistry's World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for Quality-improvement, Evidence-based Dentistry-the only WHO Collaborating Center on oral health in the Americas.

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine Recognized for Offering Preventive Care To Underserved Patients
The Columbia University College of Dental Medicine received two QARR Dental Center of Excellence Awards earlier this month. These awards from DentaQuest were given in recognition of the school's work expanding access to preventive oral healthcare for Medicaid and Medicaid/CHIP-eligible children and young adults covered by Affinity Health Plan and Healthfirst.

NYU College of Dentistry's Veterans Oral Health Initiative Helps to Address a Gap in VA Benefits
Letisha Azizah, 50, had served in the United States Marine Corps as a supply administration specialist for four years, all the while receiving regular dental care. But when she retired in 2016, she learned that dental care is not a guaranteed benefit for veterans of the U.S. Military. She also discovered how complicated and frustrating it can be to navigate the system to find out which, if any, dental services she was eligible for.

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine: George Jenkins Named Assistant Dean of the Office of Access, Equity, and Inclusion, Succeeding Dennis Mitchell
George Jenkins, DMD, MHA, Assistant Professor, has been named Assistant Dean of the Office of Access, Equity, and Inclusion at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, effective July 1. Dean Christian S. Stohler, DMD, DrMedDent announced the appointment in an email to the community on June 28, 2019.

In June, Touro College of Dental Medicine's (TCDM's) class of 2021 officially began providing patient care at Touro Dental Health, the school's clinical training facility, joining the school's inaugural class, expected to graduate in May 2020.
