Safety Tips for Ridesharing Services

While utilizing ridesharing services such as Uber or Lyft   may seem convenient, it is important to know how to do so safely. No matter where you use a ridesharing service, here are some tips to follow to stay safe:

  • When possible, travel in groups.
  • Ensure someone knows where you are going, your pickup time and when you arrive.
  • Confirm details including the vehicle type, license plates and the driver's name and picture.
  • If traveling alone, sit in the back seat. Doing so decreases the chance of contact with the driver.
  • Before you close the vehicle's door, first check that the child locks are not engaged.
  • Protect your personal information, it is not required to share contact information with your driver.
  • Know your surroundings, track the route on a map app and stay alert during travel.
  • If you sense that you are unsafe, call 911. If possible, get out and away from the vehicle and attract attention by yelling.

The Syracuse University Department of Public Safety offers free shuttle and walking escort services to ensure campus community members arrive to their destinations safely. Safety escorts may be requested by calling 315.443.7233.

Reserve your textbooks

Your fall 2018 course schedule is available to view on MySlice. You can then review the textbook information provided by your instructor on the Bookstore's textbook site. The SU Bookstore will pull your textbooks, box them, and have them ready for you when you come to campus.

For those of you who prefer to make your textbook purchases after you arrive on campus, the knowledgeable textbook staff will be available to assist you in finding your textbooks in the Schine Student Center Bookstore. Just be sure to bring a copy of your class schedule and SU I.D. with you!

Learn your SU Traditions!
The Goon Squad

Established in 1944 by the Traditions Commission, the job of the Goon Squad was to help incoming freshmen adjust to college life and spread school spirit throughout campus. Wearing elaborate straw hats and Jiminy Cricket buttons, the Goons would lead cheers at football games, help freshmen move into dorms, and usher events such as the annual Goon Show.  Today the Goon Squad has changed. They no longer lead cheers at football games or wear straw hats and buttons. The main responsibility of the Goon Squad is simple but appreciated: to aid new students moving in to their new home away from home and help them feel secure about college life.
