Minneapolis Area Synod Worship: Sunday, July 5th
The Mpls. Area Synod would like to thank all leaders for their ministries and offer an opportunity for respite. Thus, the synod staff will be providing a worship service for use on July 5th and Crown of Glory will be participating!

In the place of our livestream worship service, we will provide a worship service lead by our Synod staff. The service will include a sermon by Bishop Ann Svennungsen, a children’s sermon by Pastor John Hulden, and a full worship service with liturgy, hymns, sermon, and children’s sermon.

We will share the worship link and downloadable bulletin via our Crown Connections and website next week. We are excited to offer this worship experience!

Growing in Faith Together
This week’s gospel, Matthew 10:40-42, Jesus promised the disciples, “Whoever welcomes you, welcomes me… and the one who sent me” (v.40). Hospitality, toward both friends and strangers, has always been part of the Christian life. Jesus knows risk is involved in seeking hospitality and friendship with others. Jesus describes hospitality as the reward of that risk is as an experience of being known and knowing another which can refresh the spirit like a cup of cold water on a hot day. Jesus sends the disciples out into the world to proclaim the kingdom of God drawing near with this promise.

You manifest Jesus’ presence, and God’s presence, as the one being welcomed among strangers.

We too are sent into the world, partnering with God’s mission to love, bless, save, and reconcile the world. As we share basic things like food and friendship, shelter and water, we also share Jesus and experience Beloved Community.

Dear ones, in your prayer and practice this week, approach every interaction as an opportunity to embody Christ’s love for friends and strangers alike. In your receiving and giving of gracious hospitality the peace that passes all understanding will be yours in Christ Jesus.
SPARK News
Summer SPARK Lesson: Matthew 10:40-42 Jesus continues to teach about what God’s kingdom is like. Everyone is welcome in God’s kingdom, and when you welcome someone, you are actually welcoming Jesus!

SHIRLEY LIGHTS HER WORLD
I was truly fortunate to have a fine voice teacher in high school. Shirley, like Madonna or Cher, seemed to only need one name. She sang in the St. Olaf Choir in college, then moved to New York to sing with Robert Shaw. By the time I studied with her she still had a beautiful voice, albeit one showing the effects of a lifetime of smoking. She taught good technique including a relaxed tongue and jaw, and breath support. One of her claims to fame was five Miss Austins who went on to win the Miss Minnesota talent competition, all of them sopranos, all of them her students.

Shirley was 5 feet tall, 5’8” with her hair – flaming red of course – and described more than once as formidable. She needed to be; she also directed the high school choir at my home church. I was at college before I realized that 60 high school kids singing every Sunday for church – the Hallelujah Chorus every Easter – was not the norm. A bit of a drama queen, she would put her head in her hands when we finished singing a song for worship, and exclaim, “I thought I’d died and gone to heaven!”

I think Shirley would have loved Go Light Your World. Before we sang each Sunday, she would ask us, “What is this song about?” Then she’d answer her own question, “It’s about how much Jesus loves you, and everyone, and expects you to love everyone he loves. When you see that lonely kid at school, Jesus expects you to go make friends with him. Jesus loves him just as much as he loves you.” And that is what Go Light Your World is about, with enough dramatic flair to make Shirley happy. Take a listen.

There is a candle in every soul. Some brightly burning some dark and cold.
There is a spirit who brings a fire, ignites the candle, and makes her home.
Carry your candle, run to the darkness, seek out the hopeless, confused and torn.
Hold out your candle for all to see it. Take your candle and go light your world.

Crown of Glory Church League Softball
Chaska Parks and Recreation is considering having a church softball league starting in mid-July. There will be adjustments for playing to adhere to Minnesota COVID-19 guidelines. The league is co-ed and has a minimum of 3 females required to have the normal 10 players in the field. All skill levels are welcome and players should be 14 or older. Games are on Monday evenings. I am gauging interest in fielding a team this season. If you would like to play, please contact Grant Taylor (952-210-7678).
