Lightsaber Dueling
From the desk of Kim Stetson

Liberty Athletic Club is proud to announce that Terra Prime Light Armory (TPLA), directed and co-founded by Chad Eisner, was recently named the official ambassador for the French Fencing Federation (FFE) Laser Saber Academy, in the United States. As Liberty’s director of martial arts, this recognition provides Chad a unique opportunity to grow and enhance lightsaber dueling as a competitive sport.

Chad and fellow lightsaber enthusiast, Matt Fulton, formed TPLA in April 2012, for martial artists and teachers interested in “Star Wars.” Its mission is “to use the LED Lightsabers as weapon analog for historical martial arts in a modern and relevant context, to spread these arts and knowledge to future generations, to preserve the techniques developed by past generations, and to promote healthy and active lifestyles.”

Imagine the excitement of this group, when lightsaber dueling was recognized by the FFE as a competitive sport in 2018, just six year later! As described by Associated Press (AP) reporter John Leicester, “It’s now easier than ever in France to act out ‘Star Wars’ fantasies, because its fencing federation has borrowed from a galaxy far, far away and officially recognized lightsaber dueling as a competitive sport, granting the iconic weapon from George Lucas’ saga the same status as the foil, epee and sabre, the traditional blades used at the Olympics.”

The physicality of lightsaber competition is one of the reasons the FFE granted its support. “With young people today, it’s a real public health issue. They don’t do any sport and only exercise with their thumbs,” explained Serge Aubailly, the federation’s secretary general. “That is why we are trying to create a bond between our discipline and modern technologies, so participating in a sport feels natural.”

Another reason the federation made this move, explained Jon Porter, writer for The Verge, “is to make an attempt to make the sport more appealing to a younger generation, and it has designed its rules to make sporting matches every bit as appealing as their big-screen counterparts.”

Chad concurs that rules for lightsaber duels promote audience appreciation. Large sweeping motions, colorful illuminated weapons, and costumes contribute to an atmosphere of fun for both competitors and spectators.

Want to give this fun sport a try? Join Chad for Lightsaber Training Camp, for ages 7-18, August 26-30. Or, chose from a variety of classes for adults and children, offered this fall.

For, as Yoda would say: “Try not. Do! Or do not. There is no try.”
Berries
From the desk of Susan Cutshaw, M.S. Nutritionist

Berry season is in full swing in Michigan. Whether you find them at a farmers market, local grocery store, or you pick them yourselves, berries are a healthy summer treat. They can last up to 5 days stored in the refrigerator and will last longer if they are spread out in shallow dish rather than stacked in their original container. Skip washing until right before eating. Washing berries prior to use causes them to absorb moisture and rot.

Berries are full of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals plus they are low in calories and high in fiber, making them a natural superfood. The color pigment comes from anthocyanins which contain high amounts of antioxidants, compounds that protect our cells from damaging free radicals and could reduce the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Healthy Blueberry Muffins (from Cookie + Kate)

Ingredients
  • 1 ¾ cups plus 1 teaspoon white whole wheat flour or regular whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  •  ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  •  ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • ⅓ cup melted coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil
  •  ½ cup honey or maple syrup
  • 2 eggs, preferably at room temperature
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt*
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (6 ounces) blueberries, fresh or frozen
  • 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar (also called raw sugar), for sprinkling on top

Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. If you use a nonstick pan there is no need to greast the muffin cups.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 ¾ cups of the flour with the baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Mix them together with a whisk.
  3. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the oil and honey or maple syrup and beat together with a whisk. Add the eggs and beat well, then add the yogurt and vanilla. Mix well. (If the coconut oil solidifies in contact with cold ingredients, gently warm the mixture in the microwave in 30 second bursts.)
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix with a big spoon, just until combined (a few lumps are OK). In a small bowl, toss the blueberries with the remaining 1 teaspoon flour (this helps prevent the blueberries from sinking to the bottom). Gently fold the blueberries into the batter. The mixture will be thick, but don’t worry.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the 12 muffin cups (use an ice cream scoop with a wire level for a perfect measurement). Sprinkle the tops of the muffins with turbinado sugar. Bake the muffins for 16 to 19 minutes, or until the muffins are golden on top and a toothpick inserted into a muffin comes out clean.
  6. Place the muffin tin on a cooling rack to cool. If you have leftover muffins store them covered at room temperature for 2 days or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Freeze leftover muffins for up to 3 months

Lap Pool Maintenance
and Repairs
Upon the club opening on Friday, August 9th through August 10th, the indoor lap pool and hot tub will be closed to allow for an acid wash of the pool/hot tub floors and walls. The third lap lane maker will also be permanently repaired. In order to perform this work, the pool/hot tub will be drained Friday morning and will be unavailable for use until Sunday.

The entire indoor lap pool area (steam room, sauna, and deck) will be closed on Friday and traffic will be re-routed through the Activity Center to the family locker room, Lagoon pool, and outdoor facilities. We encourage members to enter the outdoor pools via the rear parking lot (ie., ease of stroller access). We plan to re-open the lap pool area for foot traffic and use of the steam room and sauna on Saturday, August 10 th . The pool and hot tub will re-open for regular activity on Sunday, August 11 th .

As a result of the necessary work, Aqua Aerobics ( 1:15pm-2:15pm) will be cancelled for Friday, August 9th.
