Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!
|
Greetings!
This Sunday is the Second Sunday of Advent.
|
What is Advent?
The Christian season of Christmas actually begins on Christmas Eve and lasts for twelve days, ending on January 6. (No, the twelve-day season of Christmas did not start with the song. It was the other way around.) The time before Christmas is Advent, a season of preparation for Christmas. Christians prepare for celebrating the birth of Jesus by remembering the longing of the Jews for a Messiah.
In Advent, we're reminded of how much we ourselves also need a Savior, and we look forward to our Savior's second coming even as we prepare to celebrate his first coming at Christmas. The word "Advent" comes from the Latin word adventus, which means "coming" or "visit." In the season with this name, we keep in mind both "advents" of Christ, the first in Bethlehem and the second yet to come.

Christian Formation at Emmanuel
Formation continues Sunday in Beaudway Hall at 11am.
Starting on December 5: Angels are found all over the Bible, but they play particularly important roles in the Christmas story, delivering God's message to shepherds and kings alike. As we journey to Bethlehem this advent season, join us for a formation series meditating on angels--who they are, what they do, and what they look like in scripture and art.
These programs will be conducted in-person after the 10:00am service or over Zoom at approximately 11:00am. Click HERE to participate via Zoom.

The Channel 5 news, NBC, will be filming in the foreground, we believe whilst interviewing Nancy Cummings from the La Grange Business Association.

Lawrence Hall
Youth Services
Holiday Gift Giving
It's that time of year for Emmanuel to collect gifts for Lawrence Hall Youth Services students ages 13 to 21. Trees will be up in the church with tags including gift ideas. If you can't pick up a tag, you can still drop off a gift at the church any time, or I will be glad to pick up your donation from your home.
UNWRAPPED gifts are due by Sunday, December 12th and you can include wrapping supplies if you like. Suggested gifts include: bath, beauty and hygiene products, arts and crafts supplies, sports equipment, games, books, warm clothes and gifts cards.
Students live full time at Lawrence Hall, and your gifts are very much appreciated by these children. Thank you so much to everyone for your continued support of this worthwhile Episcopal charity. Please call with any questions, Ellen B. (708)354-5847.

Emmanuel COVID-19 Policy
On August 26, Governor J.B. Pritzker announced an indoor mask mandate for all Illinois residents, regardless of vaccination status. All congregations and diocesan organizations are expected to comply with this requirement.
- Socially-distanced seating will still be maintained in the rear one-third of the church.
- People may share the Peace in whatever way is comfortable for them.
- The distribution of Communion will continue for now as it is currently being practiced: at stations with disposable cups.

Episcopal Peace Fellowship
The Episcopal Peace Fellowship was founded in New York City on November 11, 1939, with the mission to pray, study and work for peace.
The EPF has a national office with a small staff, and many local chapters. It urges the broader Episcopal Church, other organizations and people in general to adopt a more peaceful stance on issues such as the Iraq War, Iran, promoting peace in the broader Middle East, nuclear weapons, and Cuba. It offers Active Nonviolence Training, takes part in peace demonstrations, helps organize action groups, and awards peace prizes to individuals around the world who strive for peace.
The EPF Peacebuilding Online Series is a series of free, one-hour online presentations on the first Sunday of each month, starting in August. The presentations focus on different aspects of and approaches to peacebuilding, both with others and within ourselves. These presentations are offered online via Eventbrite/Zoom.
Click HERE to learn more about the EPF Peacebuilding Project.
Please join us for our next presentation this Sunday, December 5 at 3:00 pm Central. Click HERE for more information.
Please plan to attend as many of our programs as you can, bring a friend, and hear inspiring voices. Learn. Discover resources for going deeper.

Saint Of The Week:
Francis Xavier, Missionary
3 December 1552
|
Francis Xavier, or Francisco do Yasu y Javier, was a Basque. (The Basques are a people from the region of Biscay in northern Spain, whose language is unrelated to any other known language.) He was born in 1506 and studied at the University of Paris, where he met Ignatius Loyola and joined together with him and five others in dedicating their lives to the will and service of God, and forming the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1534.
In 1541 Francis sailed with two companions from Portugal to the Portuguese colony of Goa on the west coast of India (arriving in May 1542), where he set about learning the language and writing a catechism for the instruction of converts.
He visited the prisons and the hospitals, conducted worship services among the lepers, and walked the streets ringing a bell to call the children for religious instruction. His chief method of instructing the people was to write verses in their language setting forth the truths of the Christian faith, and set them to music. Both words and tunes tended to be "catchy," and his doggerel instructions were extremely popular and were sung everywhere. He preached tirelessly, both to the native peoples and to the Europeans living there.
Throughout most of 1545 to 1547, Francis preached in Malacca (another Portuguese possession) and other places on or near the Malay Peninsula. Here he encountered a Japanese expatriate (Anjiro, later baptized as Paul), and became interested in the possibility of a Japanese mission. After a brief return to Goa, he set out for Japan with another Jesuit priest and three Japanese converts. Here he learned the language, wrote a catechism, and preached. The authorities welcomed him in some towns and prevented him from teaching in others. Altogether Francis, the first to preach the Gospel in Japan, made perhaps 2000 converts there.
He then determined to carry the Gospel to China, at that time closed to outsiders. He bribed a ship's captain to smuggle him into the country, but had barely arrived there when he was stricken with fever and died on 3 December 1552. His body was brought back to Goa and buried there.
By all acounts, he was a man who preached the Gospel with tireless energy, and with great power and effectiveness. Estimates of the number of converts that he personally baptized vary, but some of them are in the six-digit range. One biographer says that he preached to more persons than anyone else since New Testament times.
Francis wrote as follows in a letter to Ignatius:
"Many, many people hereabouts are not becoming Christians for one reason only: there is nobody to make them Christians. Again and again I have thought of going around the universities of Europe, especially Paris, and crying out to the scholars: "What a tragedy: how many souls are being shut out of heaven, thanks to you!"
This thought would certainly stir most of them to listen actively to what God is saying to them. They would forget their own desires and give themselves over entirely to God's will and his choice. They would cry out with all their heart: "Lord, here am I! Send me. Send me anywhere you like -- even to India!"
