About the Program
Program Description

In this program, PCC training and supervising analysts, Drs. Sharen Westin and Jennifer Kunst, will explore psychoanalytic approaches to suicidal states of mind. They will demonstrate the value of utilizing psychodynamic formulation and interpretation when working with such vulnerable patients. This program will meet the new 6-hour licensing requirements for mental health professionals.

In the two morning sessions, Dr. Westin will present both theoretical understanding and clinical examples of the internal states of mind that contribute to suicidality.  She will identify the particular kinds of psychic pain that lead some patients to feeling that suicide is the only solution. Specifically, she will explore the purpose of a psychodynamic formulation; the components of a psychodynamic formulation; and, finally, the use of a psychodynamic formulation in making interpretations that help to ameliorate the destabilization of a vulnerable mind.  Ultimately, she will make a case for the ways in which a psychoanalytic approach can help clinicians make meaningful and effective contact with patients in distress.

In the afternoon session, Dr. Jennifer Kunst will present a clinical paper that explores the analysis of a chronically depressed, suicidal patient who had suffered severe early childhood trauma. Using a contemporary Kleinian framework, she will identify the omniscient state of mind that undergirded this patient's entrenched state of despair and hopelessness, and how omniscience functioned as a resistance and obstacle in the analysis. She will describe the capacities of both analyst and patient that supported psychic development, paying particular attention to the facilitation of hope so essential to change.
