News on the CNS Blog: Controlling the Urge to Relieve Pain

The internal battle between the need to act and the need to suppress an action is something I have been through multiple times this summer: trying to suppress the urge to scratch itchy mosquito bites. Such a state is common in everyday life and also important to several clinical disorders but has yet to be studied under real-world conditions. In a new study, researchers sought to simulate real-world pain suppression to better understand urge suppression - finding a critical role of the motor system and a possible effect in mitigating discomfort.

In a  study published in the  Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience  by Kelsey Sundby, Johanna Wagner, and Adam Aron from the University of California, San Diego, participants had to resist the impulse to press a button to gain relief from pain in the other arm. Read a Q&A with Kelsey Sundby.

PhD Positions at the University of Miami

Auditory Cognitive Neuroscience

Department of Biomedical Engineering

University of Miami

The newly formed Conscious Audition and Scene Analysis (or CASA) Lab at the University of Miami invites applications for at least two PhD positions. The CASA Lab uses multimodal neuroimaging to examine the neural basis of auditory perception and cognition. We focus particularly on how conscious auditory representations emerge from patterns of brain activity, how this affected by the presence of noise, and how such representations/patterns change across the lifespan. Our long-term goal is use the knowledge gleaned from such studies to inform the design of smarter hearing aids and diagnostic tools for patients with audiological and neurological disorders.

The lab is housed in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami and has access to multiple neuroimaging methods including high-density EEG, research-dedicated MRI, joint EEG-fMRI, and intracranial EEG. Collaborations that afford access to MEG as well as various clinical and aging populations are also in place.

Successful applicants will be admitted to the PhD Program in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami (https://bit.ly/2VggEN3) and join the budding cognitive neuroscience and neural engineering community in South Florida, which also includes Florida International and Florida Atlantic Universities. In their spare time, students can enjoy a tropical climate, diverse food and music scenes, and the distinct Latin American and Caribbean cultures that characterize Miami.

Applicants should (soon) have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline as well as an interest in neuroscience and/or neural engineering. Quantitative skills including programming (e.g. Python, R), signal processing, electromagnetism, and linear algebra will be considered strong assets. However, students without such skills may be afforded the opportunity to acquire them via conditional admission to the PhD Program and completion of additional coursework (see here: https://bit.ly/2XgTQOJ).

Inquiries can be directed to [email protected] and should include a CV, brief statement of interest, and unofficial transcripts.

University of California, Irvine

Dr. Elizabeth Chrastil, PI of the Spatial Neuroscience Laboratory in the Department of Neurobiology & Behavior at the University of California,Irvine, is seeking TWO POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS for the coming year. The Spatial Neuroscience Lab uses dynamic and interdisciplinary research methods to answer questions about how the brain processes information to keep us oriented as we navigate through a complicated world. Our primary techniques are fully immersive virtual reality and neuroscience brain imaging using multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (structural MRI, fMRI, diffusion imaging, resting state) and electroencephalography (EEG).

1. One postdoc position relates to projects that focus on the basic neuroscience of navigation, learning, and memory, as well as clinical and translational applications. Numerous opportunities for exploration and the development of creative data science approaches are available. A very strong statistical background is highly desired. Lab and
institutional resources include a new research-dedicated 3T Siemens Prisma scanner, an active Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, and a newly established sleep center. In addition to working on new projects, there are also abundant opportunities to work with existing data across multiple research programs.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION INCLUDE: a Ph.D. in neuroscience or related field, strong background in MRI data analysis including multivariate methods (multivariate pattern analysis/representational similarity analysis), and demonstrable skill in one or more programming languages (e.g. Matlab or Python). Exceptionally strong statistical skills are highly desired. The successful applicant would have a strong first author publication record and a demonstrable interest in learning and memory. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are a must. A desire to mentor and teach graduate and undergraduate students in the lab is also a plus. Beyond qualifications and skills, the successful applicant should be collaborative, resourceful, and productive and must be able to manage multiple research projects with ease and have an eye for common approaches and themes.

2. The other postdoc position relates to projects that focus on the underlying representation of spatial knowledge and individual differences in navigational ability, primarily using virtual reality techniques but also in combination with neuroimaging. Numerous opportunities for exploration and the development of creative data science approaches are available. A very strong statistical background is highly desired. Lab resources include a large ambulatory virtual reality space with wireless tracking. There are abundant opportunities for collaborative work with other researchers across the university.
