August 2019
Happy August!

We're down to the last remaining weeks of summer.    Time to squeeze in all the outdoor fun you can -- there's still plenty of time for beach going and outdoor concerts before the chill of fall sets in.  Looking for an enjoyable night out at one of Long Island's preeminent wineries?  Come join us at Harmony Vineyards in beautiful Head of the Harbor on Thursday, August 15th for a "Wine and Essential Oils Night."  Overlooking Stony Brook Harbor, Harmony Vineyards is the perfect venue to learn about essential oils for your family while taking in a breathtaking view of one of Long Island scenic harbors and lushest vineyards.

As summer winds down, our thoughts inevitably turn to back-to-school prep. Do you have teens going off to college this year?  In addition to the bedding and books, laptops and lava lamps, consider sending your son or daughter off with essential oils to help manage the daily hustle and stresses that are sure to come their way.  Young Living blends like Thieves is great for supporting the immune system to help fend off nasty dorm room germs; Clarity can help promote focus; and Peace & Calm helps support relaxation and de-stressing.  Used with a diffuser, the oils help to create a tranquil study environment and set the mood for restful sleep, or in a rollerball for a convenient way to keep favorite oils readily available when in class or other on the go.  Give us a call for more details on the benefits of essential oils for students -- and how they can provide peace of mind knowing that your child's health is being supported while he/she is away from home.

Antipsychotics for ADHD: Prescribing Dangerous Drugs for Kids

Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are 4x more likely than the general population to be prescribed an antipsychotic medication to manage symptoms, according to a new study just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The news is particularly disturbing as the antipsychotic drug use was shown to be highest in the youngest children in the study who were diagnosed with ADHD, those between 3-5 years of age.  Antipsychotics such as Risperidone are know to have significant health risks in young people, including   weight gain, diabetes, and even unexpected death.

Typically 85% of children with ADHD have increased theta wave activity in the front of the brain -- the "sleepy" brain-wave patterns that trigger impulsivity, restlessness and attention issues.  Neurofeedback is a well-researched modality that is non-invasive, non-drug and has been demonstrated to improve the neuroplastic circuitry in the front of the brain.  By encouraging the production of appropriate brain-wave patterns, neurofeedback training helps to regulate the dysfunction in the brain to overcome ADHD symptoms.  Check out Dr. Chiappino's video above and then call our office to learn how to manage your child's ADHD -- or your own -- effectively and safely, without dangerous anti-psychotics and their dangerous side effects.  (Take advantage of a complimentary 15-minute consultation special offer this month!)
Be Kind to Your Heart to Ward Off Dementia

Concerned about your risk of dementia? Better get serious about heart health.
A new 20-year-study, currently the largest and longest of its kind, found that when heart health declines, thinking and memory also begin to fail.  The study found 8% of healthy participants who experienced a heart attack or angina after 15 years of follow up also experienced significant cognitive declines.  Patients with angina showed declines in temporal orientation, i.e. knowing the day of the week, and time; heart attack patients showed declines in verbal memory and language fluency. Researchers theorize that heart-linked damage to small brain vessels impede blood flow and oxygen to the brain, thus affecting cognition.

Reducing the risk of dementia requires a whole-body approach to mind/body wellness, starting with a heart healthy, low sodium diet, daily exercise and maintaining optimum weight, as well as minimizing stress levels. Did you know chiropractic care can bolster cardiovascular health? Research has shown that chiropractic adjustments impact the automatic nervous system, which directs heart rate, helping to lower blood pressure naturally, as well as reduce anxiety levels. Other research has found  electroacupuncture
beneficial for managing blood pressure for up to 6 weeks for people with hypertension.
Our practice has a wide range of natural therapies to help promote heart and brain health and overall wellness. Call us to discuss your specific health concern.  631-265-1223.

Chiropractic and Yoga:  The Perfect Combo for Sciatica Relief

Sciatica is literally a pain in the butt. As many as 40% of people will experience the radiating nerve pain of sciatica during their lifetime, feeling pain, burning or tingling from the lower back, through the buttocks, down through the back of each or both legs to the calf or foot. Oftentimes, the pain emanates from a herniated disc or a misaligned vertebra; spasms in the piriformis muscle, the muscle responsible for rotating the hip, can also compress the sciatic nerve, causing irritation and pain. Pregnancy sciatica due to pressure from the developing baby on the nerve is also a common complaint of expectant moms.

Chiropractic care and yoga are the dynamic duo for relieving sciatica pain naturally, helping to get to the source, unlike medications which merely mask the symptoms. Gentle adjustments restore misaligned vertebrae to their proper position in the spinal column and reduce nerve irritability; during pregnancy these gentle adjustments help address the strain from the increased curve in the lower back, helping to optimize fetal positioning when the baby is compressing the nerve. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), used by chiropractors and other rehab professionals, also helps provide sciatica relief through electrical currents that help control pain signals and reduce muscle spasms.

For muscle-related sciatica, yoga can help relieve pressure on the nerve,  strengthen muscles, and improve flexibility and posture to avoid irritating the sciatic nerve in the first place.  Working one-on-one with a yoga  therapist is beneficial to pinpoint the daily habits that may initiate pain, and identify  specific individualized positions, breaths and techniques that can help alleviate the pain, release tension and help the body heal.

Don't let sciatica flare-ups spoil your summer vacation plans.  Come in for a visit before you head out for a little rxr, since long road trips can trigger sciatica in those who are prone to this pain.   Sarah K. Greco, PYRT, our yoga therapist, is offering a FREE Introductory 30-minute Yoga Therapy session this month.  Learn how to listen to the voice of your body, reduce symptoms, restore balance, increase vitality, and improve attitude.  Contact our office to schedule your appointment at 631-265-1223 or
