Acceleration East High School
Community Brief
Summer Break #4 - Monday, Aug. 5, 2019

With my wife Tammy at sunset on Long Boat Key last month.
We welcomed back our teachers today, August 5th, for pre-planning and I couldn't be more excited!

We have so much momentum behind us after a successful 2018-2019. Acceleration East made some monumental jumps in learning and achievement in almost every EOC and FSA exam! This year, our expectations and goals are centered around continuing this trajectory.
But this week, I'd like to focus on safety enhancements we are making to our campus and how students are vital to the mission this year and your support is necessary. First, all students will be required to wear their IDs. These will be distributed the first week of school. This will ensure we can clearly identify everyone on campus at any given time.

Perhaps the biggest adjustment will be our transition to a phone-free/headphone free environment between 7:20 AM-2:20 PM. If you need to send a message to your student, we suggest you email your student at their OCPS student account, which is: [email protected].

Here is the why behind the change: (1) Safety-students have always been prohibited from using social media outlets during the school day. Simply put, students in general have become reliant and dependent upon access to social media throughout the day at the expense of their learning. And, in some cases, posting inappropriate and distracting content that we deem unsafe; (2) Productivity-research suggests that students learn more effectively when free of phone distractions.

If your student needs to get a hold of you between 7:20 AM-2:20 PM, they are encouraged to use their e-mail accounts. If they need to call, they can use any of the landline phones available in our classrooms and offices between classes. In case of emergency, you will hear from our staff. If students are found on their phones/headphones during the school day, they will be collected for parent pick up only. So, please ensure you have carefully reviewed the cell phone policy with your students. This will help our school continue to thrive and remain a safe place for all students.

Best wishes for a successful week ahead!

With Phoenix Pride,

Mr. Doug Loftus

Student Recognition by the OCPS School Board
Four AEHS students were recently recognized by the OCPS school board during a July meeting. They had traveled to Washington D.C. earlier this summer after their inspirational essays were chosen above all others by a select committee. The high point of their trip was having a beautiful wreath placed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier which they brought on behalf of Acceleration East High School.

Our students and Principal Loftus shake hands with each OCPS school board member and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Barbara Jenkins, last month. If you look closely at the screen, you can see the image of the students with their wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

Principal Loftus introduced Jonathan, Willian, Ariadne, and Natalie in front of the assembled audience during a July school board meeting.

Ariadne and Willian standing by their roller coaster project which they designed and built as part of Mr. DeMarco's geometry class earlier this year. Roller coaster cars do not have any engines. Geometry comes into play as they are completely controlled by the angles and the velocity they reach while going down the first big drop. Their project was on display at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center where the above school board meeting was held.

Meet Ms. Melton!
Mathematics Teacher

We are proud to welcome Ms. Amanda Melton to our Math Dept. here at Acceleration East. Ms. Melton comes to AEHS by way of Pine Castle Elementary School where she was a permanent sub last year. Ms. Melton is a graduate of Oviedo High School and earned her undergraduate degree at UCF.  We are very glad she is now part of our Phoenix family!
Monday's Motivational Moment
SOAR LIKE AN EAGLE!

Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks?

The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come.

When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it.

The eagle does not escape the storm. It simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm.

The lesson? When the storms of life come upon us, like the eagle, we can rise above them and ride the winds of the storm that bring sickness, tragedy, failure, and disappointment into our lives.

What is your greatest challenge right now? Jot it down. And then let it lift you higher
