Student Placement Experience:
Gloria Kalong
Gloria Kalong, a graduate student at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine , completed her summer traineeship at Healthy Start New Orleans (HSNO) .
HSNO is a community-based program that helps pregnant women and families navigate prenatal/postnatal care and enroll in community assistance programs. During her field placement, Gloria reviewed current WIC (Women, Infants and Children) nutrition education, facilitated health education classes and developed programming and training resources for Healthy Start staff. Gloria was able to learn about maternal mortality by attending maternal and infant health symposium meetings. As the conclusion of her placement, Gloria completed a literature review and developed a presentation addressing maternal mortality in New Orleans.

CDC E-learning Institute (ELI) Fellowship
The CDC E-learning Institute (ELI) is d esigned to cultivate skills of public health training professionals with limited experience designing or developing e-learning products. Through partnership with the  Public Health Foundation , ELI is a free, 6-month online fellowship that offers access to CDC-developed materials and subject matter experts, as well as the opportunity to learn from peers in a positive, experiential environment. Fellows learn innovative strategies and get the hands-on experience needed to create quality e-learning products.

Applications for the 2020 CDC ELI Fellowship are being accepted until Friday, October 25, 2019.

Data into Action for Tribes: Introduction to Epidemiology

The purpose of the Data Into Action for Tribes : Introduction to Epidemiology course is to provide an overview of basic epidemiology for public health workers, including those working in the field of behavioral health. The primary objective is to increase the knowledge among tribal health departments of how to access available data from federal, state, and local resources for program planning surveillance, and data use. Topics included are basic epidemiology, research questions, measures, study types, interpreting data, epidemiology in Indian country, and behavioral health epidemiology.

Data into Action for Tribes: Introduction to Epidemiology Learning Objectives:

  • Define the role of epidemiology

  • Develop research questions

  • Develop measures

  • Describe the types of epidemiology study designs
