We just finished a historic week for the Democratic party. It was a convention unlike any other and one that we will certainly be remembered. Kamala Harris became the first women of color to be on a national ticket. The convention celebrated the diversity of our nation and highlighted the important work we need to do to restore our country.
Hillary Clinton summed up what this election can't be: "We can not have another should of, would of, could of election."
Barack Obama described what this election needs to be: "You can give our democracy new meaning. You can take it to a better place... by voting like never before so that we leave no doubt about what this country we love stands for - today and for all our days to come."
As women, we are an important political force to make that happen. Women have outvoted men in every national election since at least 1964.
Women were credited with the female wave of candidates, many of which JAC-supported, that came to Congress in 2018. These women changed the make-up of the House and together became a loud voice for issues that matter most to us.
But it hasn't always been that way.
The Democratic convention coincided with the 100-year anniversary of the ratification of women's right to vote. That was also a battle for the soul of our nation. But the fight did not end on Aug 18, 1920. Blacks, Native Americans and Chinese immigrants were not granted voting rights.
Today many women - especially women of color - remain disenfranchised at the voting booth. We certainly have more work to do to ensure that all Americans have the secure right to vote.
Women can make the difference in November. Let's vote for all those women that never had the opportunity to vote and for all those that suffered for us to have that sacred right. Most importantly, our daughters and granddaughters are counting on us.
The greatness of this country, with all of its untapped promises and hope, awaits us. It is within our grasp, but we must first get out to vote.

'Trump Says He Moved U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem 'for the Evangelicals'
U.S. President Donald Trump said that his 2017 decision to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and recognize the city as the capital of Israel was done for evangelical Christians. "And we moved the capital of Israel to Jerusalem," Trump said at a rally held at an airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, apparently referring to his decision to move the embassy from Tel Aviv. "That's for the evangelicals."

How to Vote by Mail in Every State
More Americans than ever are expected to vote by mail in this year's presidential election as states attempt to make voting safer amid the global pandemic. Five states -- Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington and Utah -- routinely conduct their elections almost entirely by mail. In response to the spread of Covid-19, at least four additional states -- California, Nevada, New Jersey and Vermont -- and the District of Columbia have pledged to mail ballots to all properly registered voters for the November election. Some other states made it easier to vote by mail in response to the coronavirus crisis by changing various rules.

Twitter Maintains Ban on Candidate Laura Loomer
Laura Loomer won't be getting her Twitter account reinstated despite winning the Republican primary Tuesday in her bid to represent Florida's 21st Congressional District. Loomer is a far-right activist whose confrontations with journalists and political figures helped her amass an online following. But her online antics ran afoul of rules set by social media companies, and she has been banned from Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, as well as other platforms like PayPal, Venmo and Uber.

Donald Trump has made a lot of fact-free statements in recent years, but his incoherent babbling about who qualifies as appropriately religious would be comical if it were not so pathetic and desperate. Every Sunday, he is on his knees attending Mass and praying for his country, his family, and all those in need in our beloved nation. I know this because I know Joe Biden and I come from the same Irish Catholic faith tradition.

Democrats have to be very happy with what they were able to accomplish this week with their convention. Their production of the first all-virtual convention went off mostly without a hitch. At times, the last night seemed like whiplash with a serious segment on faith and forgiveness followed by snark from emcee Julia Louis-Dreyfus, for example. But none of that will be remembered. What will be, and perhaps for a very long time, was the speech Joe Biden was able to deliver. Biden gave a lot of thunderous speeches on the floor of the U.S. Senate when he was a senator and he has appeared at conventions before, but no speech he has ever made was as important, and perhaps as well-delivered, as this one.

The 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which barred states from considering a voter's sex in determining eligibility, is commonly credited with expanding the right to vote to women, but the amendment didn't actually guarantee all women the right to vote. Although the amendment, which was ratified 100 years ago Tuesday, eased the obstacles some women faced at the ballot box.
