We are working hard to plan a wonderful experience for your senior student including meeting with a parent group and with staff and students to get creative ideas for this important celebration.
In this issue you will find important dates you may want to keep on hand.

Commencement Ceremony
La Follette’s Commencement Ceremony will be held on Friday, June 12th at 7:30 at the University of Wisconsin – Kohl Center located at 601 West Dayton Street, Madison, Wisconsin. We are fortunate to have access to this outstanding facility which provides ample seating, air conditioning and an excellent sound system. Tickets are not required for this
event
,
allowing graduates to invite as many guests as they desire. More Information to follow.
Midwest Scholastic – Graduation Attire
Mark your calendars! Seniors who will be participating in the graduation ceremony on June 12
th
, are required to wear a (La Follette) cardinal cap & gown, silver stole and cardinal & silver tassel.
The week of January 13
th
, we distributed the graduation packets and order forms in your senior English classes. These packets contain a catalog for the cap and gown requirements along with all of your class of 2020 apparel including class rings.
Midwest Scholastic representatives will be at La Follette High School on Tuesday, January 28
th
in our commons during the lunch hour. The representatives will be collecting the order forms and payments as well as any question you may have. AFTER January 28
th
, all orders must be placed directly with Midwest Scholastic online or by phone. La Follette High School will not accept orders or payments.

La Follette College and Career Center Updates
|
|
Greetings from the LHS College and Career Center. As we rang in 2020 our College and Career efforts were in full force. Our college and career readiness team has been working with students in their science class planning out course selections for school year 2020-2021. The goal of this event is to assist students in thinking about MMSD graduation requirements, as well as their own personal college and career goals.
As science classes have been a buzz, our College and Career center has been hopping hosting our first theme career week. Careers within Health Sciences is our current theme. Each day we have career individuals coming in to meet with students pertaining to career opportunities, as well as educational opportunities they may offer. Some events happened within classes, others were during our Lancers lunch.
We are thrilled to work with all Lancers in different capacities as they work through the process of figuring out what their goals for success are after LHS!

Please allow me to share with you a few words about taking German as a curricular choice in grades 9-12. German is one of the few modern foreign languages in Madison, which does not begin in the 7
th
grade here in, and therefore is sometimes overlooked as a viable high school foreign language option. Yet the UW university placement test scores of our students reveal that after taking only four years of German students have consistently achieved comparable scores to those with six years of preparation in other languages.
Most students who choose German, for a variety of reasons, are enthusiastic about their choice and remain with the language for their years of high school. As a part of the student’s learning experience the German program sponsor social, cultural and civic activities, and exchange programs with high schools in the respective countries, which introduces students to another culture and in many cases produces deep friendships, rounding out a total learning experience. The students who take German also have the benefit of having the same teacher and fellow students throughout their language study at La Follette due to the smaller class sizes.
Wisconsin has a very rich German cultural heritage and Germany has now become, similar to the U.S., an extremely diverse multi-racial nation of immigrants. Please check out these excellent reasons to study German, including my personal favorite “to attend a German university”, where they often do their instruction in English even, and which is free for both Germans and foreigners alike.
I
hope those of you not yet taking a foreign language class will consider this option when you register for next year. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. I would be privileged to introduce you to the rewards of language study.

Parent Volunteers Needed!
|

Dear La Follette Music Parents,
Saturday, February 22, 2020 marks a very big day in the music department calendar of La Follette High School. On that day we will be hosting the Solo/Ensemble Music Festival for the Madison Metropolitan School District. In order to make this event a positive, memorable, and successful experience for our music students, district-wide, we will need many adult volunteers to assist with set-up (the Friday prior, after school), serve as room chairpersons, office workers, concession workers, and to help with clean-up (immediately following the festival, Saturday afternoon).
In addition, it always helps to have a few adults “unassigned” who can fill in at any of these jobs if someone else
needs to hear their own child or children perform. We are looking for people who can help for the full day, or for a half-day. Even if you can spare just a
couple of hours, it would be most helpful and greatly appreciated!

Chromebook Replacement Chargers

Chromebook replacement chargers can now be purchased from the school library. Chargers are $35 and can be paid for online or in the neighborhood office. Please note that students must first stop in the library to let Ms. Clark know that they would like to order a new charger. Chargers can be paid for the following day and then picked up in the library. Email

Civics Testing MUST be completed by June 1, 2020. This test will hold you up on getting your diploma. Obligations need to be taken care of before rehearsal (Date TBD).

If you have any issues making arrangements getting your senior picture taken by deadline, please contact me (

) by the end of the school year (June 12, 2019) or by September 6, 2019 to get on the list to have a professional photographer take your picture at La Follette free of charge before the deadline of September 27, 2019. We also have other low cost options available upon request.
Senior Ads for the Statesman yearbook
should be turned in as soon as possible. Space is limited and may sellout early at the start of the school year. Senior Ads must be turned in complete to be assigned a spot in the yearbook. We do not reserve or hold spots for incomplete ads (missing any content such as text, images or payment). We will accept senior ads now for next school year or send in over the summer to the listed address on the order form.
The last day to pre-order a Statesman yearbook is December 20, 2019. If a book is not ordered
and
paid in full by Friday, Dec. 20, 2019 students can purchase a book at the end of the school year. Limited quantities will be ordered, first come first serve at that time.

MSCR
Homework Club
is open after school Monday-Thursday in the LMC: PCT Mondays from 2:28-4:15 pm and Tuesday-Thursday from 3:37-5:15 pm. Help is available from LHS teachers and MSCR tutors for any student who needs help with schoolwork. Snack is provided.
MSCR
Lancer Saturday Academy
is another option for students to get extra help. Saturday Academy is held in the LMC from 9am-noon on Saturday mornings 3 or 4 weekends each quarter. Help is available for any La Follette students and snack is provided.
MSCR Lancer Saturday Academy will be open on the following upcoming dates:
February 15, February 22, and March 7.
MSCR Metro Basketball
League for 11-12th grade continues until February 29. Teams practice after school either Tuesday or Thursday and play games on Saturdays.
MSCR Ski & Snowboard Club
has two more trips on February 6 to Devil’s Head and February 21 to Cascade. No experience is necessary - beginners are encouraged to join! Lessons and rental equipment are available. Space is limited and the deadline to sign up is one week before each trip - so don’t wait to sign up!
