Growth in Central Oregon
Growth in Central Oregon started long before "pandemic" was the most spoken word of the year. Once our COVID-related restrictions ease up, will the trend continue? Large gatherings in confined spaces, a regular occurrence in big cities, have been curtailed across the country. In some locations, beaches and parks have remained closed. Colder temperatures will impact businesses relying on outdoor seating to meet social distancing requirements as we head into fall, with many companies expanding their work from home employees. Amongst the uncertainty, it seems inevitable that people will continue the move to open spaces.

This chart from the US Census Bureau shows the most recent annual change in the population, compared to the average year-to-year changes since 2010. Washington County was the only county in Oregon that saw their population decline, while Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson Counties all continued to grow. Interestingly, the chart shows only two California Counties with a decreasing population, Shasta (Redding) and Butte (Oroville) Counties in the north-central part of the state. These Census statistics throw water in the face of conventional wisdom about a massive migration from big cities!
