School Begins Monday, Aug. 12: Remember to Observe School Zones
As Garland ISD students prepare to return to school Monday, Aug. 12, the City reminds all motorists to observe school zones and stay alert near schools, crosswalks and playgrounds.
 
Visit GarlandTX.gov to learn about a new pedestrian crosswalk at Hillside Academy, as well as reminders to help keep motorists and pedestrians safe this school year.

The 74th annual Labor Day parade and festivities, presented by the Noon Exchange Club of Garland, will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2.

Garland Breaks Ground on Dog Park
The excitement over breaking ground at Central Park Thursday, Aug. 1, was secondary only to the realization that the Garland Dog Park is within mere months of becoming reality.

Staff anticipates the $1.3 million project will be completed in January. Garland Dog Park amenities will include three fenced paddocks, drinking fountains, shade, lighting, seating, fencing and parking.

Apply for Cultural Arts Grants Through Sept. 20
The Garland Cultural Arts Commission, Inc., announces its 2019-20 grant program for local arts groups, historic preservation organizations and other artistic entities.
 
Applications may be picked up at the Granville Arts Center Box Office, 300 N. Fifth St. in Downtown Garland. Applications will be available between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday through Sept. 19.   Learn more .
Escape Room Fun for Teens at the Library Friday and Saturday, Aug. 9-10
Teens ages 13 to 18, test your puzzle-solving skills in the Superhero Final Exam Escape Room from 10:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, and Saturday, Aug. 10, at the South Garland Branch Library, 4845 Broadway Blvd.
 
Sign up in teams of two to six to solve the puzzles and "escape" the room. Each team will solve a series of puzzles in order to free another superhero from a prison cell.

Block Party Basics Class Tuesday, Aug. 13
Learn how you and your neighbors can party like block stars!

Join the  City of Garland's Office of Neighborhood Vitality from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the Main Street Municipal Building, 800 Main St., for a free class to learn all the basics of block parties.

Topics will include  first steps,  best practices,  new ideas and  available resources.  Register now !
Clear the Shelters Saturday, Aug. 17
Find the perfect furry friend for you on Clear the Shelters Day, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Garland Pet Adoption Center, 813 Main St., or Garland Animal Services, 600 Tower St.

On this day, Garland Animal Services will join animal shelters across the nation to waive pet adoption fees in an effort to find homes for hundreds of pets.

City Council Meetings
Aug. 5 and 6

DART Service Changes
Aug. 12
Beginning Monday, Aug. 12, DART users will experience improved bus routes that will enhance connections and service for the entire DART system and  get you to your destination quicker and easier.  Changes also include expanded service hours on weekdays and weekends, more frequency for some routes and better on-time arrivals with the adjusted schedules. Latest Water Quality Report Available Online
Garland's newest Drinking Water Report is now available online. In the report you will find the results of year-long water testing throughout the city. Garland continues to earn top ratings from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
