It is with mixed feelings that we have learned that two of our staff members are leaving Church of the Ascension.
Byron Proaps
, our Facilities Manager, has decided to
retire as of
A
ugust 15th.
Byron has been employed by Ascension for
35 years!
Byron has been a dedicated employee and friend, and we will miss him. We are planning a reception on
August 25th after the 10:00 am service
for Byron after he retires. We hope everyone can attend so that we can send Byron off with a wonderful celebration!
In addition,
Megan Alden
, our Director of Family Ministries, is leaving to pursue a career in Elementary Education. Megan has been employed by Ascension for 4 years and has worked to upgrade our facilities and programs for our Family Ministry, including beginning a “Tweens” group that feeds into our Middle School ministry. She has especially gifted us with wonderful Vacation Bible School and Christmas Pageant programs, in addition to involving our children in outreach programs.
Her last day will be August 31st.
Please express your thanks to Megan on the remaining Sundays in August!

Megan, Sabra, and Rebekah helped with sharing the VBS decorations!

Recruiting Prayer Partners
|
|
Prayer Partners is a ministry that pairs an Ascension teen with an adult parishioner in the church who will pray for that teen and exchange monthly letters, hopefully building relationships between our teens and the wider church. Last year we had three pairings of Prayer Partners and teens. This year we hope to double that! This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with a young person and support our youth one-on-one. To sign up an adult or teen, a written sign-up will be on the reception desk of the church office, or you can contact GiGi (
gigi@knoxvilleascension.org) with any questions.

|
Dinner Angels is a program in which parents and other parishioners are invited to serve dinners to our youth as a fellowship and service opportunity. Want to try out a new recipe? Have a flair in the kitchen? Just willing to feed a small crowd? We welcome home-cooked meals and catered meals. We welcome and encourage our dinner angels to attend youth group with us after serving. Our Fall 2019 schedule is live! Check out our sign-ups, details, and schedule:

Just in Time for Rally Day!
As a fundraiser for the Rally Day mission project, the youth will be selling Rally Day t-shirts in a choice of colors: coal gray, peacock green, walnut, and neon coral. Adult and children’s sizes are available (children’s sizes are not available in the walnut color). We have set a goal of selling 300 t-shirts! Shirts will be $15 each. The profit from any shirts sold above the fundraising need of our Rise Against Hunger meal packing event will benefit the Youth Mission Fund. The deadline to order a shirt will be August 20. Shirts may be picked up on Rally Day following each service. If you wish to support our fundraiser without the purchase of a t-shirt, we welcome any donation as well. Look on the back cover for a sample of the t-shirt art!

Continuing this Week!
Walking with Jesus in the Gospels' Healing Stories
Wednesdays, Going through August 7
6:30 pm, Room 209
Do the healing works of Jesus call to you? Once a week, for one more week, join with others in reading and walking through the wonderful accounts of the healing work of Jesus. After reading two or three healing stories and answering simple written questions provided by Joan Keuper and a mystery guest, there will be a time of sharing your answers if you wish, or just listening to those of others. Each session will end with a time of prayer. Please bring your bibles (copies will be available for those who need one). This course is easy to enter into the middle of, so, if you are interested, attend one of the sessions!

Foyer Groups are one of Ascension’s long-standing fellowship ministries. Groups of about 8 people meet in each other’s homes about once a month for six months, share a simple meal, and just get to know each other in a comfortable setting. The Spring/Summer rotation is coming to an end and the Fall/Winter groups will be formed in September. To that end, please see the following:
- If you have participated in this current (Spring/Summer) rotation and would like to be assigned to a new group for Fall/Winter, you do not have to do anything. You will be included in a new group automatically.
- If you have participated in this current rotation but do not wish to be included in the Fall/Winter one, please notify Bettie Corey at bcorey41@comcast.net by September 9. If she does not hear from you, you will be assigned to a new group.
- If you have never been in a foyer group or if you have not been active in this current rotation and would like to rejoin, please notify Bettie at bcorey41@comcast.net by September 9. Please include your name (and, if a couple, both names), a telephone number, and your e-mail address.

August Outings
During the hot month of August 2019, the Ascension Trekkers will strive to stay cool by hiking to or beside water for as many dips or soaks as may be needed. The first one is on Wednesday, August 7, which will take us through West Prong Trail near Tremont. This is an update from a previous hike announcement. The trail is a moderate 5 mile hike with a relaxing stream and some respite at the turn around point. The gang leaves at 9:00 am for the hike.
The second hike will be on Saturday, August 17, at 8:30 am when Trekkers will drive to near Waynesville, NC to explore Flat Creek Trail from Heintooga Ridge Road. The Trekkers have not had this 5.3 moderate mile hike on their agenda but the descriptions are impressive: lush, gorgeous, Hobbit-Like are a few of the adjectives. Depending on rainfall prior to the hike, there may be some streams to be rock-hopped and some damp logs. RSVP's are requested ahead of time so transportation needs can be anticipated. Contact

Thursday, Sept. 12, and Friday, Sept. 13 | 8:00 pm | Nave
The 2019-2020 season of Friends of Music and the Arts opens at 8 pm on 12 and 13 September with a spectacular new production by Marble City Opera: the North American Premiere of City of Ashes, a sixty-minute chamber opera set in war-torn Berlin in 1945. Dual themes of love and redemption propel this poignant story, as the lives of German girlfriends Lotte and Lili and Lotte’s Welsh lover, Owen, intertwine in unexpected and unexpectedly human ways.

Tell us what you think!
This edition of the Parish Paper was an experiment of sorts with a new layout in a magazine style. We hope you'll sit down with the articles and dig deep as we approach the beginning of another school and church year. Let us know what you think about this kind of layout. We may use it more often in the future!
