editorial from the New England Journal of Medicine
If you’ve been keeping up with the news by following reliable sources, you already know what’s written in this editorial. I avoid political discussions with patients, but this article is an important read, and you can use this link here.

There are necessary intersections between government and medicine. As a physician, I believe that government intrusion into the personal medical choices that are meant to be made between physician and patient is wrong. However, government involvement in maintaining the accessibility of basic and life-saving medical care, as well as directing matters of public health is necessary.

It seemed inconceivable in March that we would be continuing to adjust our lives this winter, and into the next year, so drastically to keep COVID at bay. It was unthinkable then that our government would fall so terribly short of doing what it needed to do to keep us safe, because we’ve never had such a catastrophic failure of this degree before. Even despite the deep bench of our country’s talented scientific and medical community, and the depth of our medical industrial capabilities, we’ve become completely undone by this virus because our government has chosen to ignore the science and the recommendations from reliable scientists and physicians.
Science is the pursuit to understand the natural world, for its own sake. It needs be free of political, ideological, and economic motivations. Whether it is to better understand how our bodies work, or if a medical treatment is safe, or to dispel our established biases, we always have to rely on what the science shows. Granted, sometimes there are gaps in the science – the studies that haven’t been done, statistical analyses that are incorrect, and so on – science is the search for the truth, but the application of science is imperfect because humans are imperfect. In the case of the emerging interaction of COVID19 and humans, we are learning as we go along.

At this point, you’ve probably already voted. Not just this election, but each election, think about the candidates who have a respect for science. Whether it’s about this pandemic, or the next pandemic, or global warming, or whatever our next big challenge will be. Vote for science – because we cannot escape the consequences of ignoring it.
