OUR MAIN SQUEEZE

Electric train structure under a squeeze test.

The new high-performance electric trains continue to progress as they go through extensive testing. Earlier in the manufacturing process, the car shells underwent the "Squeeze Test" (shown in the above image) which verified the designed strength of the car shell under various stressors, including twisting, bending, and external pressure. More recently the truck (bogie) which holds the propulsion motors, wheels, and axles passed the structural and fatigue endurance tests. The electric trains will continue to undergo a range of tests to ensure safety and functionality.

San francisco tunnel work resumes

San Francisco Tunnels construction

Construction is advancing along the Caltrain corridor! To accommodate the brand new electric trains, construction crews will continue work in the four San Francisco tunnels in February. Beginning on February 22, crews will start installation of the overhead contact system (conductor rail and wires) inside the tunnels.

In order to facilitate work in the tunnels, trains will not operate on weekends between San Francisco and Bayshore Stations from February 22 to March 29. Caltrain service will stop at Bayshore Station and a bus bridge will transport passengers to the 22nd and 4th & King Stations. Weekday service will not be impacted.

2019 recap

Caltrain Modernization made big strides towards electrification over the past year. To date, we installed 1,400 foundations and over 750 poles along the corridor, began assembly of 28 train cars, and created hundreds of jobs in the process.

Check out our 2019 Year in Review web page for more about the progress we made!

What Is CalMod?

The Caltrain Modernization Program (CalMod) includes electrification and other projects that will upgrade the performance, efficiency, capacity, safety and reliability of Caltrain's service. The current electrification project will electrify the corridor from San Francisco to San Jose and replace 75 percent of Caltrain's diesel service with high-performance electric trains, reducing air pollution and providing better service to more riders.
