Summer may have just started but many kids are already thinking about going back to school. Getting ready for the new school year starts earlier when you have a child with disabilities. Instead of shopping for new school clothes or uniforms, your child may have also outgrown his wheelchair. Besides notebooks, pencils and new lunchboxes, your child may need a gait trainer or walker to help get from class to class, or a slant board to read or write from a seated position.
Younger children may also need an adaptive stroller to facilitate riding the school bus.
July and August are busy times of the year for FODAC, when it helps many of its pediatric clients like Raynell get ready for school. Raynell first came to FODAC when he was four, after spinal meningitis left him deaf and requiring a wheelchair for mobility. He is now fifteen and in high school, and FODAC recently fitted him for a powerchair so he could get around at school more easily.
