What We've Been Up To...
Planning for fall quarter
The ITRC's staff has been planning for the upcoming fall quarter - exploring new platforms, and creating new virtual programs. The fall calendar will include both familiar programs such as Native American Family Night and the American Indian Writing Circle along with some new programs including those planned for Native American Heritage Month in November.

Stay tuned for our calendar updates!
Ask a Native Triton...
Each month, we like to profile one of our amazing Native American students at UC San Diego. If you would like to nominate a Native American student at UC San Diego for us to feature you can email us at itrc@ucsd.edu.
The ITRC is proud to introduce...

Juan Reynoso
Ipai Kumeyaay - San Pasqual

Department: Education Studies
M.A. ASL/Teacher Credential Program

Please join us in welcoming Juan to the ITRC as the new Graduate Student Community Intern, sponsored by the Graduate Division.

We are very excited to have him on the team and can't wait for you to meet him.
What's your favorite thing about San Diego?
One of my favorite things about being in San Diego, aside from having the privilege of being near the ocean, is the rich diversity of cultures and backgrounds San Diego has to offer. I have always found a sense of community and grounding here in San Diego, the home of my ancestors (the Kumeyaay) since time immemorial.

What do you miss about home?
Well, I currently live on my reservation (The San Pasqual Band of Indians), so being homesick is something that I can't relate to at this present moment. I will say that when I have found myself living away from my community, I have felt a sense of disconnection from my inner identity. I would often wonder what was happening, what needs needed to be met, and how my loved ones were doing.

What advice do you have for incoming students?
I would encourage incoming students to seek and explore the resources that are available here at UC San Diego. Find individuals that will support your vision and never stop reflecting on how you can do better and be better for yourself and your local communities. As an Indigenous person, you have the wisdom and inherent ability to truly transcend academia. Take your place in this world, assert yourself in tough conversations... Most importantly, be 100% authentic in whatever you seek to do!

There is still time to register for Indian Health Council's Gathering of Native American. This virtual conference will be held from August 21st to 23rd,  2020 and is open to all Native Americans ages 18 to 25.
Sam Mitchell (Yaqui), Doctoral Candidate in Theater and Dance, invites you to an exciting workshop: A Third Way, on September 1, 2020 from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm (PST).

A Third Way intends to focus on healing from radicalized trauma through movement. The workshop is open to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), and is the first event in a larger project that will culminate with a virtual performance.

To RSVP for the event, please contact Sam Mitchell by clicking the link below:
Collegiate Recovery Program
The ITRC looks forward to partnering with the UCSD Collegiate Recovery Program.

They provide safe space and supportive community for students in recovery or seeking recovery from addiction. Students at any stage of recovery and at any point in their academic journeys are welcome.

Students can engage with other UCSD students, come to a support group meetings, attend a sober social event or just get in the loop about volunteer opportunities and upcoming activities.
