2021 was momentous for making strides on advancing the rights and interests of Indigenous Peoples in conservation and climate policy action:
For the first time, IUCN Indigenous Peoples Organisations proposed, endorsed and voted on IUCN World Conservation Congress motions as a distinct membership category, including a call toprotect 80% of Amazonia by 2025.
100% of motions sponsored by IUCN Indigenous Peoples Organisations were passed by IUCNâs Members Assembly â demonstrating support for Indigenous-led and informed conservation solutions.
The Marseille Manifesto included a high-level commitment on supporting Indigenous Peoples in advancing the Global Indigenous Agenda.
In April, the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB), the Indigenous Womenâs Biodiversity Network (IWBN), Red de Mujeres IndĂgenas sobre biodiversidad (RMIB), Sotzâil, and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) co-hosted a dialogue on practical tools for engagement with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
During a United States Agency for International Development (USAID)âs COP26 event titled Our Climate Future is Female, AkâTenamitâs President and Legal Representative Graciela Coy spoke with USAIDâs Administrator Samantha Power and Nisreen Elsaim, Chair of the UN Secretary Generalâs Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change and Chair of the Sudan Youth Organization on Climate Change, about women and girls leading climate action.
FPCI (Foundation for the Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge) Executive Director Onel Masardule and COICA (Coordinadora de las Organizaciones IndĂgenas de la Cuenca AmazĂłnica) Vice Coordinator Tuntiak Katan spoke aboutA New Vision of Climate Finance from Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities at a Global Environment Facility (GEF) COP26 event.
The International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change (IIPFCC) held several meetings at COP26âs Indigenous Peoples Pavilion.
