Engage the real changemakers today

Ramiro Batzin, Director of Sotz’il and IUCN Councillor, summarises a year of achievement in advancing Indigenous priorities across environment policymaking:

Last September at the IUCN World Conservation Congress Indigenous Peoples reaffirmed their rights at the World Summit of Indigenous Peoples and Nature. Together, IUCN Indigenous Peoples Organisation members presented their proposals as stewards of nature by launching their Global Indigenous Agenda for the Governance of Indigenous Lands, Territories, Waters, Coastal Seas and Natural Resources and calling on the global community to take affirmative actions to support implementation.

  • For the first time, IUCN Indigenous Peoples Organisations proposed, endorsed and voted on IUCN World Conservation Congress motions as a distinct membership category, including a call to protect 80% of Amazonia by 2025.

  • 100% of motions sponsored by IUCN Indigenous Peoples Organisations were passed by IUCN’s Members Assembly – demonstrating support for Indigenous-led and informed conservation solutions.

  • The Marseille Manifesto included a high-level commitment on supporting Indigenous Peoples in advancing the Global Indigenous Agenda.
