Join Anne Fairfax, partner at Fairfax & Sammons, on a walk through the mesmerizing pedestrian walkways of Via Mizner in Palm Beach, Florida. Wander through the world of courtyards, verandas, and fountains that testifies to the enduring legacy of architect Addison Mizner, whose work in Palm Beach established him as one of the premier visionaries of twentieth-century architecture, and identified South Florida with the Spanish Mediterranean Revival style which has since been imitated the world over.

ONLINE COURSES AND LECTURES
In stunning renderings, the long-gone Sainte-Anne-la-Royale, designed in 1662 by Italian architect Guarino Guarini, is given new life.

Join Giuseppe Mazzone, Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame, for a virtual reconstruction of this Parisian Church, which was only partially completed before finally being destroyed in 1823, along with an exploration of the potentials of new technologies.

This lecture was presented as part of the Driehaus Summer Studio Retrospective—four weeks of daily online content inspired by the ICAA's Summer Studio in Classical Architecture program.

The ICAA expresses gratitude to The Richard H. Driehaus Charitable Lead Trust for its sponsorship of these programs.
Many of the core elements of classical design—including, for example, column capitals, keystones, pedestals, and acroteria—are designed to articulate the key points in a building where the opposing forces of weight and structure begin, meet each other, and terminate, in the delicate frozen dance which is architecture. These forces might be seen as enemies locked in a perpetual conflict that threatens to eventually end in ruin, but classicism works tirelessly to visibly reconcile them with poetic, ornamental expressions of structural diplomacy. Columns do not merely impose themselves upon lintels, but soften their engagement with pillows, or else compromise their verticality with horizontal gestures such as scrolls and brackets, and even present bouquets to their structural partners. This is the language of kindness—of politeness and consideration—that is also required for humans to maintain their social and political structures.

By considering the thoughts of a number of past architects such as Alexander “Greek” Thomson and Louis Sullivan, this course traces the interpretation of classical architecture as an artistic building system dedicated to the aesthetics of affection and respect; this idea is also superimposed over the forms of several different buildings that were designed and built in different places, at different times and for different functions, in search of one of classicism’s greatest virtues: the expression and celebration of grace under pressure.

Dr. Nathaniel R. Walker is Assistant Professor of Architectural History at the College of Charleston. He earned his Ph.D. at Brown University in the History of Art and Architecture, an MA in Architectural History from the Savannah College of Art and Design, and a BA in History (with a minor in German) at Belmont University.

Stay tuned for the latest episode of Classicism in Conversation, available online later this week.

In the second entry of our mini-series 20 Questions, listen in on a frank and entertaining conversation between three architects and two "laypeople," as each group asks what they have always wanted to know about the professions of their counterparts. Architects and show hosts Kellen Krause, Anthony Catania, and Rodrigo Bollat Montenegro are joined by Jeanz Holt, an attorney, and Rich McGovern, who works in digital media in New York City. Although all five of our contributors are enthusiastic about architecture - Jeanz and Rich even worked previously for the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art - find out what the enthusiasts have always wanted to know about the professionals, and how the architects think of the "laypeople" who live and work in the buildings they design.

Classicism in Conversation is available on the following platforms:

CASE STUDIES IN NEW CLASSICAL & TRADITIONAL DESIGN
Thursday, August 6
6:00 PM EDT / 3:00 PM PDT

1 AIA CES Learning Unit|HSW and 1 credit towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture

In this session of the Case Studies series, Andrew Cogar, Ryan Yurcaba, and Clay Rokicki of Historical Concepts lead an in-depth discussion on the rebuilding of the small town of Senoia, Georgia through architectural and planning projects that leverage public and private funding, benefiting the greater good. They will talk about how incremental projects can lead to the revival of commercial activity on Main Street, and how that can lead to a new chapter for the town with mixed-use office space and residential units. The presenters will share regional design influences and how details and materials were incorporated into new structures to intentionally continue the heritage of Senoia’s built environment.

EXCLUSIVE ONLINE EVENTS FOR ICAA MEMBERS
Thursday, August 13
6:00 PM EDT / 3:00 PM PDT

Although it may be unexpected that a classically-inspired architecture firm could also be an early adopter of technology, Peter Pennoyer Architects believes that classicists are well-positioned to lead the architecture field into the future. While hand-drawing is still a cornerstone of their work, Peter Pennoyer Architects is passionate about using digital tools to advance their work. One of the first residential firms to get a 3D printer in-house and to hire a dedicated 3D Print Technician nearly 10 years ago, they have continually invested in the latest technology, including Virtual Reality, BIM, and 3D Printing.

Join firm founder Peter Pennoyer, BIM Director Colin Slaten, and 3D Production Manager Philip Davis for an in-depth exploration, and visual demonstrations, of the ways they are employing these digital advances in their work and for their clients.

NOTE: This event is free and open to ICAA Members exclusively. Advance registration is required to receive the link to the webinar platform.

ICAA Chapters' Online Courses & Lectures
Hosted by the Northern California Chapter:

Thursday, August 6, 8:30 PM EDT / 5:30 PM PDT

Ancient Rome is much in the news. Not for any sensational archaeological discovery, or novel historical insight, but in its very old, familiar role as metaphor, as cautionary tale. A question increasingly asked – Are we Rome? - was previously posed by 17th, 18th and 19th century French and English visitors to the city, their respective empires at one summit or another. What did they make of shattered Rome? Of the not quite quiescent remains? Can we understand something of the city’s meanings for them through their preferences with architectural knick-knacks?

Let’s find out. Join the ICAA and Lucia Howard for a free webinar on this very timely subject.

Hosted by the North Carolina Chapter:

Tuesday, August 18, 12:00 PM EDT / 9:00 AM PDT

Ellen Biddle Shipman, Beatrix Farrand Jones and Marian Cruger Coffin shaped and revolutionized the profession of landscape architecture. They practiced in the Country Place era between 1890-1940, considered a golden age of design and construction. They were all known for their formal gardens and lush plantings which influenced landscape design then and now.

While taking different paths, each of them persevered to become the first generation of women to practice in a male dominated profession.

Ornament is defined as artistic elements added to an otherwise functional structure or object, with the sole purpose of making it more beautiful. This elaboration has the power to both beautify and glorify, and the content does not have to be explicitly understood by the viewer in order to be enjoyed.

This course will examine the Language of Ornament, based on categories rather than geographies. Humans have been creating similar forms across the world for millennia, and this lecture will explore artistic expression that appears to be universal both in origin and intent. Participants will achieve a greater degree of fluency in the language of Ornament.

Webinar: Introduction to the Classical Moldings – Parts I & II

3 AIA CES Learning Units|Elective and 3 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture for full program attendance (both sessions)

Moldings are the basic building blocks of classical buildings, the “atomic units” at the very heart of the classical language of architecture, and a working knowledge of moldings is the starting point for a thoughtful approach to design.

Students of all abilities will find interest and value in this fast-paced introduction. You will learn to draw the classical moldings freehand, and will gain an understanding of their purpose and correct use, and how to employ them for greatest effect.
