Governor Newsom Signs SB-95, Authorizing 80-Hour Work Leave For COVID-Related Issues
On Friday, March 19, Governor Newsom signed into law SB 95 that authorizes covered full-time employees to utilize up to 80 hours leave for COVID-related absences, such as the need for self-quarantine and vaccination appointments. This permission also expands to the care for an ill family member or child whose school has been temporarily closed due to COVID-related concerns.

SB 95 extends protections through September 30, 2021 and is retroactive to sick leave taken beginning January 1, 2021. However, small businesses that employ 25 or fewer workers are exempt from the legislation, though may offer additional paid sick leave.
