EMPOWERING A CARING COMMUNITY THAT PROMISES THE WELL-BEING OF EVERY CHILD
October 2019
We feel extremely fortunate to live and work in Pottawattamie County. Why? Because community members, leaders, providers, and citizens are consistently advocating for the betterment of children and families.
This philanthropic spirit cannot be found just anywhere. We are all part of the fabric of the community and we are seeing changes in the tides of the landscape. When we unite our efforts toward common goals, we can help so many to grow and thrive.
As the leaves turn and the air grows colder with the changing of the season, we know we must dig in. Just as the leaves shed from trees, we're making changes and shedding the old to make room for the new. In the words of Amit Ray, "In every change, in every falling leaf there is some pain, some beauty. And that's the way new leaves grow."
Our schools, neighborhoods, and community are better because of the work we are all doing.

Help Your Baby Deal with Emotions
Child Trends, June 2019

Just like adults, babies experience a wide range of daily emotions. It's a parent's job to help them sort through the difficult ones. But do you know how to help your infant cope? New research offers some clues.

Happy ... sad ... scared ... angry. Babies have all types of emotions. Now, a new study shows that parents can help their little ones manage those big feelings. Researchers studied 135 moms, dads, and babies and found when parents used an approach of talking called "mind-mindedness," their babies had better emotion regulation at 12 months. Mind-mindedness techniques involve acknowledging and verbalizing an infant's emotions. Comments like, "You want daddy to pick you up," "You're excited to play," and "You don't like it when mommy does that" are examples.

Vaping-related Illness Cases Rise in Iowa
Iowa Department of Public Health, September 2019

Cases of severe respiratory  illness
associated withvaping  continue to be reported across the U.S. and in Iowa. Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 805 cases and 12 deaths. In Iowa, there have been 23 reported cases and no deaths. Of the 23 Iowa cases, ages range from 17 to 60 and 18 have reported the use of THC. Mirroring national statistics, most of the cases (78%) have been male. All Iowa cases have recovered.

Nationally, most cases have reported the use of vaping and e-cigarette products containing THC; however, vaping products and devices that do not contain THC have also been reported among affected states. Case numbers will likely continue to increase as this investigation continues.

Iowans should not use vaping and e-cigarette products since the cause of this outbreak is not yet clear and the long-term health impacts of these products are unknown. Patients with a history of vaping who are experiencing breathing problems should seek medical care. Health care providers should ask patients with respiratory illness about the use of vaping and e-cigarette products. Health care providers are asked to report severe respiratory illness in patients with a history of vaping or e-cigarette use to the Iowa Department of Public Health (1-800-362-2736).

Program Spotlight:
Grief's Journey

Since 2001, Grief's Journey, formerly Ted E. Bear Hollow, has been a welcoming, safe place where grieving children, teens, and adults find hope. Research indicates that unresolved grief correlates to issues such as poor school performance and emotional and behavioral concerns, whereas healthy coping leads to long-term success for the child, the family, and the community.

Grief's Journey provides free peer support programstraining and education, and consultation throughout Nebraska and Iowa. Staff are also available to provide educational presentations that include: Grief 101, Self-Care, and Supporting Grieving Youth.
