Message from Pastor Tim
Dear Members and Friends of the Ark and Dove Community,

Deep thanks to our Worship and Facilities Ministries for pulling together our first outdoor worship service. We had a great crowd. We had the opportunity to sing Taize music and we ordained and installed Lori Kroner and Sara Fox as elders and Paula Griggs as Deacon. It was a joy to see so many masked faces. It was a deep joy to be able to worship together! This service has helped us to get ready for our next outdoor worship, which will be on Easter Sunday. The new speakers worked very well and had just a minor problem with the sound board.

We had circles set up on the lawn to help us keep social distance, which was a little weird for some, but comforting to those who have been especially disciplined in their social distancing.  Right now the Fauci and CDC science indicates that gathering outside with masks is pretty low risk. And we can sing!

Some years ago at Session one of our elders gave another elder a big hug. Finally the receiver of the hug let his opinion be known to the hugger. “Elder hugger, you are always hugging me. I am not a hugger, I would prefer not to be hugged.” The session burst out in laughter, and the hugger agreed to keep it to a warm greeting.

Now that we are gathering outside, we must approach “reentry” with love and respect for our fellow members.  It is a fact that as a result of the pandemic, different people will have different comfort zones and different sized “space bubbles” in the months to come. By all means communicate clearly with each other.  While in worship, we will stay in our circles. After worship feel free to mingle mosey. If someone steps back a little, they are sending you a clue; their bubble is larger than yours. If we can stay cooped up for a year, surely we can learn individual cues for spacing.  If someone expresses the need for more space, please receive the message in and with love.

Peace of Christ,
Tim

Message from Pastor Jon
Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove,

Not long ago, a friend of mine told me that people would call him names and slurs while he walked his city streets. He is an Asian American man and talked about it as I would talk about something ordinary. Sadly, this type of harassment is not out of the ordinary in North American history. Sadder still, discrimination and violence against Asian Americans has sharply risen during the pandemic. Such hate, as Howard Thurman would say, walked on earth this week killing children of God.

Over the last year, North American public officials over-emphasized the coronavirus' place of origin while downplaying its local spread. Coronavirus has been labeled the "kung-flu" and former President Trump called it "the China virus." Due to discrimination and racist generalizations, many Asian Americans have been made to be the scapegoats of this pandemic. This is not the first incidence of this in America. Words have consequences. Hate speech leads to violence. However, it does only little to point the finger at public officials who have bolstered racist attitudes, particularly against Asian Americans. We must, again, reckon with our responsibility as citizens living in a society where hate crimes occur with such frequency.

At Ark and Dove, we talk and reflect on racism with some regularity. Several leaders continually ask us to educate ourselves on race. This is primarily because racism is the complete contradiction of our values and mission. It is also because race continues to be the conscious and unconscious reason so many people are hurt and destroyed on this land. We have to talk, reflect, and educate ourselves. Please read one of the articles below and spend some Lenten contemplation considering what prejudices and biases linger in you. Then get behind some hate crime legislation.

Peace,
Jon

I've been wanting to sing American composer Elaine Hagenberg's composition for a very long time. With this week's theme of "love" from Thurman's Jesus and the Disinherited, we finally get to hear it this week with Brittney Wellington on 'cello. “O Love” was inspired by the words of Scottish minister, George Matheson in 1882. Blinded at the age of nineteen, his fiancé called off their engagement, and his sister cared for him as he endured new challenges. Years later, on the eve of his sister’s wedding, he faced the painful reminder of his own heartache and loss as he penned the words to this hymn. Given a fresh melody, this setting for SATB choir and 'cello uses hopeful ascending lines representing renewed faith. Though lingering dissonances remind us of past heartache, the beautiful promise remains: “morn shall tearless be.”

Peace,
Margaret

Many thanks to everyone who helped with running Taize service on Wednesday. It was so great to finally have a service with congregation in attendance. I miss seeing you all and look forward to more outdoor services this spring! This week is the last week in Lent, and our study has led to our theme of "love." I hope you enjoyed and are more enlightened from reading Thurman. I know I am. The band hymn is a classic that we have played many times for live service, "Indescribable" by Laura Story. Even though her version is quite beautiful, we went with a bit more upbeat take on the song like Chris Tomlin’s recording. The postlude is "Sea of Islands," which is a piece taken from a larger work known as "Oceans of the Moon" by Per-Olov Kindgren.

Have a blessed week!

Equipping the Saints
Best Ways to Be a Bad Church Leader
Would you like to:
a) be a better leader at church?
b) be a better leader at home?
c) be a better leader at work?
d) have fun?
e) All of the above!

If your answer is “yes” to any of these questions, you will want to join in the next installment of Ark and Dove’s continuing series of Equipping the Saints, Best Ways to Be a Bad Church Leader. Parish Associate Stephen Price-Gibson will lead us in exploring leadership, through the lens of family systems theory in three weekly sessions, beginning, Tuesday, April 6, 7 pm. The goal will be to equip leaders to be more confident in making positive contributions in every kind of church group, as well as at home and at work. To register, please email Tricia Gray at tricia.gray@yahoo.com. For more information, contact Stephen Price-Gibson at spricegibson@hotmail.com.

One Great Hour of Sharing
Restoring Hope, Feeding the Hungry, Empowering the Oppressed
One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) gifts share God’s love with people experiencing need. OGHS gifts designated for Self-Development of People (SDOP) support the PC(USA) ministry participating in the empowerment of economically poor, oppressed, and disadvantaged people, seeking to change the structures that perpetuate poverty, oppression, and justice. Please prayerfully consider giving to One Great Hour of Sharing. Lori Kronser, Mission Elder, lkronser16@gmail.com.
Mission
Unity Garden
The Mission Ministry is in the very early fact-finding stage of creating a Unity Garden, on the church property. This will be a labor-intensive project, so we will need a large, devoted team of planners and gardeners. There is a bit of a time crunch because we will need to begin planting around April 30 for summer veggies. If you are interested in being part of the team, please respond here.
Mission Ministry Meet and Greet Zoom Party
Are you new to Ark and Dove? Have you been here awhile and have often wondered what Mission teams exist and what they do? Have you been missing the Mission opportunities you've participated in before COVID? Keep an eye open for our Mission Ministry Meet and Greet Zoom Party in the early part of April! Pastor Jon described it as a "Mission Fair." You will get a chance to hear about some potential new initiatives, and you will get a chance to hear from team leaders for the Mission projects that are in place now. Ark and Dove is a mission-oriented church, and we want you to know all about the Mission Ministry and find a place on a team where you would like to devote some time.

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s Office of Gender, Racial & Intercultural Justice will be offering three virtual anti-racism training sessions in 2021. The first Introduction to PC(USA) Anti-Racism Policy Training session will be March 23, 6 p.m. It will be led by the Rev. Denise Anderson and Rev. Shanea D. Leonard. There will be additional offerings of the training in June and September. Click here to sign up for the March 23 training. A key component of the Matthew 25 invitation is dismantling structural racism, and the sessions aim to introduce concepts around racism and explore the anti-racism policies of the church. Shanea Leonard said: "We hope to see a variety of folks, especially those who need/want more information about our PC(USA) anti-racism policy and those who are working to dismantle racism within their own context. This training is for both the novice and the intermediate learner as we all still have so much work to do to overcome the sin of racism." For more, please see here.
