THE 20TH ANNUAL MCKIM LECTURE
On March 10th, 2021, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) was proud to partner with the University Club and the One West 54th Street Foundation to present the Annual McKim Lecture, named in honor of renowned architect, Charles McKim. The 2021 speaker, Ben Pentreath, delivered a virtual lecture entitled "Lessons from History," examining how crucial it is to have a harmonious union between modernity and classicism.

The lecture, open to ICAA Members only during its live stream, is now available to watch online in its entirety.

Ben Pentreath is one of the United Kingdom’s leading architectural and interior designers. His London-based design studio has established a powerful reputation across a wide-ranging variety of disciplines. With a background in Art History, which he studied at the University of Edinburgh before attending HRH the Prince of Wales’s Institute of Architecture, Ben worked for five years in New York and then with the Prince’s Foundation, before starting his own practice in 2004. In 2008, Ben opened a tiny eponymous design store, Pentreath & Hall, which has become one of the most influential design shops in London.

In making homes, how do you take, as Weaver said of Lutyens, adversity and turn it into amenity? This question has had the attention of the firm Oliver Cope Architect since Oliver’s first house in 1985. On Wednesday, February 10th, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) hosted a virtual lecture featuring Partners Oliver Cope, Rita Marks, and Olivia Rowan, as they discussed the design and revitalization of some of New York and Long Island’s most treasured homes, all featured in their new book, Oliver Cope Architect: City Country Sea. This lecture was moderated by award-winning architectural historian and journalist, Clive Aslet.

FEATURED ONLINE COURSE
2 AIA CES Learning Units|Elective and 2 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture for completion of Parts I & II

For the past century and a half, America’s colonial-period buildings have inspired countless architectural designs. With numerous illustrations, this class will explain the rationale of many of the forms and details that give character to colonial works, both northern and southern. Emphasis will be placed on domestic architecture, demonstrating how their design features, when properly applied, can serve to enhance literate, if not creative, contemporary modern versions.

The ICAA was pleased to welcome this two-part series from Calder Loth, the Senior Architectural Historian for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and a member of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Advisory Council. Viewers may receive 2 AIA CES Learning Units|Elective and 2 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture by watching this two-part video course and subsequently scoring at least 70% on a quiz that tests your understanding of the material.

Part I traces the origins of the colonial style, starting with European precedents and continuing to examples in the 18th Century.

The second part of Calder Loth's presentation on colonial architecture picks up in the 18th Century, with an increased focus on interior and decorative elements.

ICAA WORKSHOPS
Saturday, April 24
10:00 AM - 6:30 PM EDT

The ICAA is excited to announce the first-ever Open Access iteration of the Workshop in Classical Architecture program. This special one-day online version of the Workshop program is free and open to all current university students.

The ICAA Workshop in Classical Architecture—a program typically held in-person in partnership with universities across the country—introduces classical architecture as a living language. The program begins with architectural case studies that show the use of traditional design strategies in new buildings and places, both internationally and in the US. Students are then guided through a series of hands-on drawings by professional architects from across the country that help demystify the forms and systems of classical architectural composition. For the first time, this program is available to students from any university around the world.

This program will be held virtually via Zoom. All students who attend the full program are eligible to receive one year of free membership with the ICAA, which includes complimentary or reduced tuition to courses and programs and opportunities to connect with students and professionals throughout the US. Full participation also includes 8 credits towards the ICAA's Certificate in Classical Architecture.

The ICAA's Workshops in Classical Architecture are generously funded by
The Benton Family Foundation.

5 AIA CES Learning Units|Elective and 5 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture (Doric Order)

This practical hands-on drawing course covers the third subject in the Introduction to the Elements of Classical Architecture sequence: the nomenclature, grammar, and proportional relationships of the canonical Doric order. The course is centered around freehand drawing of the Doric column and entablature. All instruction is live and on-line. This introduction forms part of a foundation for understanding all of the classical orders from the practitioner’s perspective, and lays the groundwork for exploring their use within an architectural composition.

Tuesday, March 30th
6:00 PM EST / 3:00 PM PST

Please join award-winning landscape architect and author, Janice Parker for a virtual lecture on Tuesday, March 30, as she shares her insights on the collaborative design process. Janice will review innovative historical collaborations and relationships, as well as current examples, that have led to successful outcomes. The lecture will explore the reasoning and methodology of the collaborative spirit that has formed the foundation for some of the most memorable projects.

The collaborative process has many aspects, beginning with a strong understanding of how the process will work, and how to create the most meaningful partnerships. There is a special relationship between the architect and landscape architect and it is essential to unite the talent, vision and aesthetic sensitivity of the design team to achieve the most distinguished finished projects.

Please note that this event is free and open to ICAA Members only. Non-members will have the opportunity to watch a recording of the event afterwards.

Presented as part of the Bunny Mellon Curricula at the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. The ICAA is very grateful to the Gerard B. Wednesday, April 7th
6:00 PM EST / 3:00 PM PST

For architect Andrew Cogar, president of Historical Concepts, and renowned interior designer Steven Gambrel, the most successful collaborations are those that intentionally blur the lines between architecture and interior design until they become one seamless design process. After years of working together, they’ve achieved that goal, honing their partnership to express a common vision while creating homes that are inventive and original.

Join Cogar and Gambrel on Wednesday, April 7th at 6:00 PM as they open the doors to three incredible projects—each featured in the new Historical Concepts’ book Visions of Home—and walk you through a synergistic design process that incorporates regional precedents with client sensibilities to craft homes that honor history, style and creativity. This event will be moderated by Jacqueline Terrebonne, Editor in Chief of Galerie Magazine.

Please note that this event, previously reserved for ICAA Members only, has now been opened to the public.
