Historical Tidbit: Dandelion A Weed You Can Eat
Yes, we call them a weed, but as an early spring treat in the early 1900's they would be picked for a dish of dandelion greens. This natural food was used in recipes to add a different kind of taste. Children would be sent out to pick and then the stem and blossom would be plucked from the greens and stewed on the stove top. It was a delicious dish served with vinegar for a sauce. The dandelion greens are somewhat like spinach when cooked. The root was also used as an addition to salads and an extract could be made to make tea, coffee and wine.
If you feel adventurous and want to try something different, just be sure that the dandelions you pick are not covered in pesticides or other chemicals before eating or cooking them. To be on the safe side, you can go to a store that sells natural foods and buy them. A number of my family members would talk about the "stewed greens" and wine made with dandelions they had picked. I know one of their favorite fields to pick them in was on the east end of Plymouth Street at the Plympton line.

Public Notice From Raynham Health Agent About EEE
  • There has been one confirmed human case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in a Massachusetts resident this year.
  • EEE is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.
  • People can help to protect themselves and their loved ones by taking the following few precautions:
Avoid Mosquito Bites:
  • Apply insect repellent when outdoors, preferably a repellent with DEET. The oil of lemon eucalyptus will also work as a repellent on mosquitoes.
  • Wearing clothing that covers the skin will help prevent bites.
Mosquito-Proof Your Home:
  • Drain Standing Water
  • Keep mosquitoes outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors.
Protect Your Animals:
  • Keep all animals indoors during peak biting times to prevent any infections.
  • If an animal is diagnosed with West Nile Virus (WNV) or EEE, owners are required to report to DAR, Division of Animal Health by calling 617-626-1795 and to the Department of Public Health (DPH) by calling 617-983-6800.
Raynham Health Department continues to work closely with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. For more information www.mass.gov or call Raynham Board of Health (508) 824-2766. Fact sheets on EEE and on reducing exposure and risk are available at www.town.raynham.ma.us

Second Aerial Spraying for Mosquitoes
  • The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources announced that due to the continued high risk of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a second round of aerial spraying for mosquitoes will take place in specific areas of Bristol and Plymouth counties.
  • Aerial spraying is anticipated to begin on Wednesday, August 21, and continue over several evenings between the hours of 8p and 4a. This is to avoid possible interaction with honeybees and fish.
  • Residents are encouraged to visit the DPH website at www.mass.gov for the latest updates on spraying.
  • The pesticide that will be used during the aerial spraying is called Anvil 10+10. This product has proven to be extremely effective in exterminating mosquitoes worldwide for over 20 years.
  • To avoid mosquitoes altogether, it is suggested to stay inside during their active feeding time: during sunset (around 7:30p).
For more information visit
www.mass.gov , www.town.raynham.ma.us , or call Board of Health Agent Matthew Tanis at 508-824-2766.

The Full Sturgeon Moon
The Full Sturgeon Moon rose as we listened to a chorus of katydids across the cranberry bogs. According to the Farmer's Almanac, "the fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month.
A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Preparation: the action or process of making something ready

I prepare for each day with a list goals I want to achieve. Inevitably, a monkey wrench; important conversation or spontaneous priority will side track me. I need that list to re-focus and remember what is important to accomplish.

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

“Your strength doesn't come from winning. It comes from struggles and hardship. Everything that you go through prepares you for the next level.” ~ Germany Kent

“Opportunity does not waste time with those who are unprepared.” ~ Idowu Koyenikan

“I believe luck is preparation meeting opportunity. If you hadn’t been prepared when the opportunity came along, you wouldn’t have been lucky.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

Inching forward, slowly improving my quality of life came from preparation, gaining knowledge and making mindful spending choices. We must prepare for the life we want, even if it's done in baby steps. ~ Jacquie
