Message From Our Chair

Everything you've always wanted to know about Women in Philanthropy ---  and have asked!

This fall season is so wonderfully filled with exciting WIP news. We had a lovely luncheon where we revealed our 2020 grant theme as our powerful speaker poignantly addressed the learning needs of early childhood at-risk children.

Laurie Burke, our Governance chair, also reviewed the new Women in Philanthropy Handbook below. Your advisory board spent a good bit of time reviewing, updating, revising and clarifying some of the items that have been in our guidelines for the last 16 years.

You will also find Frequently Asked Questions, abbreviated as FAQs. They will give you the "skinny" (and don't we all wish it was that easy) on explaining the workings of Women in Philanthropy.

These two documents will serve you well; and they will also assist in your efforts to help recruit new members to WIP. New memberships will be critical to reaching our grant making goals as well as preparing for our 20th anniversary.

And just a reminder... we have moved the WIP contribution year to calendar year January 1- December 31. Your giving year will no longer be based on your anniversary or the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry's fiscal year of July 1-June 30.

Certainly if you have any questions let me know, as I can be reached at 843-686-3945, ext. 300.

Thank you for your support of Women in Philanthropy,

Kathi

Fall Luncheon

Thank you to our Events Chair Peaches Peterson for planning the  delicious luncheon at Sea Pines Country Club.

Andi Purple, our Grants Committee chair, announced  this  year's grant theme: "Providing Enrichment and Readiness for At Risk Children."

Our speaker was Dr. Beth Hammond, an assistant professor and assessment coordinator in the Education Department of USC-Beaufort. She discussed definitions of "at risk" children and the various causes --- poverty, illiteracy of parents, lack of appropriate prenatal care, nutrition, etc. She stressed the importance of vocabulary development in young children. Dr. Hammond said that the number of words that a child knows by the age of three will influence his/her learning ability through the college level. She has also developed programs for teachers to enhance their role in language development of their students.

The  Grants Committee will send letters to all nonprofits in the area in early November so that they can submit grant applications if they have needs appropriate to this theme.

A special thanks to Diane Neal for capturing these wonderful images from the luncheon:
