Stormwater Planters and Rain Gardens for Businesses
This summer, HPED and the Haverford Partnership for Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) has been collaborating on a project to build stormwater planters and rain gardens for businesses in the Township. Stormwater management is essential since they help maintain the health and safety of our parks, neighborhoods, and business districts especially during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding. Stormwater planters are custom built wooden boxes connected to stormwater downspouts that slowly release rainwater into the boxes decorated with beautiful drought resistant plants. Rain gardens, on the other hand, are beautiful built-down landscape areas that intercept runoff from buildings, driveways, and other impervious surfaces before it can reach the storm sewers and streams. Both of these features ultimately prevent erosion and flooding and improve the appearance of residencies and businesses. HPED and EAC has a grant to install five to six stormwater planters and ten rain gardens this year for free to residencies and businesses.
HPED's summer intern, Margaret Chen, began identifying businesses who have ideal locations for stormwater planters and rain gardens. She has helped build both a rain garden and planter, created a list of businesses that have the potential of having a rain garden or stormwater planter, and has recruited businesses to participate.
