Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.                                   ~ Hebrews 12:1, 2

Dear Church Family,

As we approach All Saints Sunday, I am reminded of the saints who have gone before us in this congregation who are still "giving" through endowments set up in their memory years ago.  The Turner-Leck-Gillum Endowment provides for special musicians and expenses "over and above the budget of the church". Things like the brass quintet at Easter and bagpiper at Advent Lessons & Carols for example.

I had the privilege of hearing Harold Turner, a beloved organist and choir director for 25 years at fpcw. His legacy continues through this fund. I did not know E. B. Leck, but he/she is described as a "long-time and devoted member". I did know Mary Bell Gillum; a strong and smart woman ahead of her time. She would go on Work Trips with the high school youth and be their cook for the week; back when we would paint churches in rural Wisconsin or Iowa.

Lastly, the Margaret Neuhaus Music Ministry fund was established to support attendance by laity and staff at music education opportunities or to bring the educator to us as a congregation. I knew Peggy (Margaret): an elder, deacon, member of the Chancel Choir and Chancel Bells and excellent flute performer. She was a soft spoken, smart, lovely woman who inspired me in her quiet way.

How fortunate we are to have these enduring gifts that keep on blessing us year after year. As you move through your week, I invite you to think of someone; alive or no longer alive, who blesses you in special and unique ways.

Yours in Christ,
Peggy Massello

Adult Study:  Theoacademy on Discipleship
Through Nov. 24
Using the great resource of our Presbyterian colleagues in Kansas City called Theoacademy, we will be using this curriculum to discuss "The Foundations of Presbyterian discipleship." The topics will be: A People of Grace, Wicked Bad, Who Do they Say I Am?, Update Your Faith System, and Blessed to Be a Blessing. Join us at 8:45 am in the Upper Room for an hour of empowerment as we learn to deepen our faith together!

In Sunday worship this year, we're making our way through Brian McLaren's book,  "We Make the Road by Walking."  Organized into 4 parts around the theme of being "fully alive in Christ," this study will guide us for the next twelve months. The idea is that we are not finished yet. We are all "in the making." We are not merely passive observers of the history happening to us. We can be active protagonists in our own story. And notice - it is "we," not "I," that make the road. " We make the road by walking." It reminds us of that old adage, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." That's the truth of the gospel - God calls us to be "fully alive in Christ" together , as a community, to "make the road by walking" together , not as self-sufficient lone-rangers doing their own thing. Join us for worship as we follow this path together! You can purchase a copy of the book in the church office or on your own.

Faith and Racial Equity: Exploring Power and Privilege  - join us for this 8-week JustFaith class to be held on Tuesday nights in the Lounge at fpcw, from 6:30-8 pm. Our Adult Faith Formation team is co-sponsoring this class with our friends from St. Francis Xavier. The class awakens groups to the economic systems, public policies, cultural norms, and hidden biases that empower some and oppress others. The class introduces a framework for understanding how power and privilege influences racial disparities. Most of all, we will explore how our faith informs our response to what we are learning, as well as have time to discern action steps for working toward racial equity in our community. To cover the class materials, we ask for a $50 registration fee. If that is a burden, please let us know and we will find a way to help. To sign up, contact Elder Irris Boaz) or Pastor Jeff.  Learn more at justfaith.org or by contacting our co-facilitators (members of St. Francis), Vic and Mary

Mark your calendars for Sunday, December 8th. This year the service will be at 4 pm with a Wassail party to follow. Please note: there will be no 10 am service or Sunday School on Dec. 8th.
