Big Thinking on the road is back!  The next event in this series is being presented in partnership with the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and will take place on September 18, 2019 at the Château Laurier Hotel in Ottawa. Dr. James Orbinski will present a public lecture entitled Promoting health for refugees in an era of forced migration.  To know more, visit the event page, and don't forget to register!
New Congress theme: In case you have not already heard, we are pleased to announce the new theme for Congress 2020: Bridging Divides: Confronting Colonialism and Anti-Black Racism. A full description of the theme is coming soon, but in the meantime please read Federation President Patrizia Albanese's statement from last week to know more.
New reconciliation videos available: We've added new content to our reconciliation resources on the Federation site! Catch sessions on land acknowledgments  as well as on universities and reconciliation  ( both resources are sessions captured at Congress this past June). Be sure to also check out 5 new lectures in the Big Thinking at Congress series, and 2 new interviews with our 2019 Canada Prizes winners!
Congress 2020 Planning Meeting:  The Congress 2020 team is already working full speed on bringing you another unforgettable #congressh experience! More than 70 association conference organizers will meet with the Federation and Western University on September 25 in London to officially kick off the planning process. Stay tuned as Congress 2020 takes shape, and check back to see the   highlights of Congress 2019.
2020 Canada Prizes nominations open: Now that 2019's winners have been celebrated and a new cycle begins, we are opening up the nomination process for the 2020 Canada Prizes. Visit our Call for Nominations to learn more about eligibility. The nomination deadline is September 30, 2019.

Indigenizing the academy: A Native Studies student at the University of Alberta created a campus map that is helping foster a reimagining of spaces on campus through an Indigenous lens. The Cree-titled pîtos-mâmitoneyihtamowin (reimagine) UAlberta draws attention to places on campus that have colonial ties, or significance for Indigenous peoples, such as Sweetgrass Bear, Sundial Medicine Wheel and The Dove. Update to Canada Research Chairs Program: The Canada Research Chairs program has recently announced more ambitious equity targets. The percentages of women, visible minorities, people with disabilities and Indigenous scholars have been updated to reflect representation among the Canadian population, instead of their numbers within the hiring pool of applicants. Showcasing graduate students' skills to employers: Two new programs at the University of Western Ontario are educating graduate students and employers alike about how to bridge the gap between school and work. The first step is showcasing the rich skills students possess, such as project management, analytical thinking and leadership. Read more here.

Anthropologists without borders: The Canadian Anthropology Society, a Federation member, will hold its 2019 conference jointly with the American Anthropological Association this November 20-24 in Vancouver. Driven by the goal of their first cross-border collaboration, both organizations have produced an inspiring joint program on the theme Changing Climates: Struggle, Collaboration, and Justice. Governor General Innovation Award nominations open: The Federation has once again been invited to nominate outstanding candidates from our community for the 2020 Governor General's Innovation Awards, and we are accepting recommendations from our member institutions and scholarly associations. To recommend an individual candidate or a team, please be in touch with Sonia Vani, Director of Member Engagement and Communications, by September 20.
