Practice of the Week: Have Compassion for Yourself Self-compassion usually takes only a few seconds. Then, more centered and heartened, you can go on with doing what you can to make your life better. Studies have shown that benefits of self-compassion include: reduced self-criticism; lower stress hormones like cortisol; increased self-soothing, self-encouragement, and other aspects of resilience; help to heal any shortages of caring from others in your childhood. "The Importance of Sabbath"
Carrie McEvoy
Labor Day is a holiday when we honor those who fought for workers' rights - among them the right to time off from work. In this service we'll explore how sometimes the best way to get work done is to stop working - to take time to rest, reflect, regroup, and recharge. Carrie McEvoy is a member of The Unitarian Church in Westport, and a student in the Master of Divinity program at Meadville Lombard Theological School.
Our CUUC Youtube Channel has videos of many past services. Check it out HERE!

News From Environmental Practices

Two of the largest beverage companies, Coke and Pepsi, will soon start selling their brands of water, Dasani and Aquafina, in cans instead of bottles to help reduce their contributions to the world's plastics litter problem. Cans are less likely to wind up into the oceans (Bloomberg). In addition, cans are preferred to plastic bottles because all single-use plastics are made at "cracking" facilities that are highly polluting (5gyres).

Tick-Borne Illness Alert

USA Today reports there have been 4 cases this summer in NY and NJ of the deadly tick-borne Powassan virus, and 2 of the patients have died. While the disease is rare, there is currently no treatment. When on our beautiful property and other wooded areas, take careful measures to avoid tick bites:
  • Stay on clear well-traveled paths.
  • Wear light colored clothing to spot ticks easily.
  • Tuck your pants into socks.
  • Use insect repellents containing DEET or diethyltoluamide for skin applications and Permethrin for clothing and shoes.
  • Shower as soon as possible after spending time outdoors.
  • Check everyone, including pets, frequently and at the end of each day; remove all ticks promptly and properly.
See the NYS Fact Sheet for Powassan HERE.
