Dragon Tales Weekly Newsletter

Dear St. George Families,
Dream, Believe, Achieve! What are the dreams and hopes of our children? An issue of Time magazine offers insight.
Some interesting results from the Time survey indicate that kids feel it is harder to be 13 year-old these days than it was for their parents. It is probably safe to assume that most generations feel this way, but every age has new anxieties and pressures.
Many 13 year-olds believe that the US will be a worse place to live by the time they are their parents' age than it is now. However, the study indicates that today's 13-year olds are less likely to smoke, drink, do drugs, commit a crime or drop out of school than those of their parents' generation.
Some of the biggest changes in the home revolve around discretionary spending. While household income hasn't expanded, the size of houses has, and so, 70% of mothers living with children ages 6-17 are in the workplace. Today instead of Slinkys and Silly Putty, 13 year-olds are spending money on iPods, X-Boxes - and poker! Music for our kids today is filled with anger and inappropriate language.
All this makes the job of parenting even more challenging. Keeping kids focused on the real priorities in life and not focusing on all the material things can be a challenge. Making sure your kids are talking to you and coming to you with their concerns is very important. Being there to listen, to offer advice, and to be a good role model is even more important.
Anne Frank wrote in her diary in 1944 that, "Ultimately, people shape their own character." Today's 13 year-olds, growing up in a world that is more competitive, more complex, and more connected than their parents faced, can rise to the challenge with support and guidance.
We need to teach kids to dream about a positive future, instill the belief that it can be accomplished through hard work, and help them achieve those dreams through our support and role modeling.
Our kids are great and their future is bright! As parents and teachers our role is even more important today. Be a role model of Jesus to your children and they will be Christ-like! Have a great week.

God Bless,
Jack Nelson
