This month's Member Story comes from Margaret Anne Korver. Thank you Margaret for sharing your Morgan journey with us!

My story is long and varied. I got my first horse when I was 7 (1964). He was a Morgan gelding whether he was purebred or not I will never know. Arabians were the favorite breed in the public stable where I boarded “Pedro” during the winter. Eventually I sold him and bought a ¾ Arabian mare which I trained as a 3-year-old. Had a lot of success showing her but no money to further her career. I ended up showing other Arabian owner’s horses. During that time, I looked after Morgans when the owners were at horse shows. Then I eventually sold my Arabian mare when I got married in 1982. This all happened in Canada. We moved to the USA in 1984.
My daughter, Krystal, at about age 5 saw a picture of me with a horse and wanted a horse. I told her I was 7 when I got my 1st horse. Needless to say, 2 years later when she turned 7 years old after never mentioning horses during those 2 years she announced she was 7 and wanted a horse.
Aware of the cost of acquiring and then boarding etcetera I decided to research riding lessons to ensure she was really interested. Not far from where we lived someone offered riding lessons and they had Morgans. 2 years later after starting lessons I purchased HVK Kenyatta (2002).
|
|
Krystal and her twin Chantalle did well showing in local open shows showing HVK Kenyatta.
I purchased Hipp’s Ring My Bell in 2004 for Krystal. They did well but didn’t connect. I kept “Bonnie” but purchased PMF Keep The Roses (Runner) for Krystal in 2005. She showed Runner from 2005 to 2011 as well as HVK Noble Prince in 2010 and 2011.
I purchased Highland Ridge Daniel in 2010 under the deception that he was for Krystal. He ended up being my western pleasure horse. We did well at nationals over the years earning several 1st places.
In 2012 I purchased SMS Beaconsfield for Krystal. She earned many championships with him including 2 world youth championships in park harness in 2013 and 2014.
My favorite horse show is the “Nationals”. So many people you know to mingle with and cheer for. I currently show Rosehaven He’z Top Class, my homebred horse out of Bonnie. In 2019 we won Reserve World Champion Ladies Amateur. Another of Bonnie’s foals Rosehaven HC Korver, has done well for Jim Breckinridge earning a World Gentlemen’s Championship.
In 2006 Nancy Eidam became a mentor and instructor to both Krystal and me in the Morgan World. She is a beacon of information and love of the Morgan Horse.
As I age I know my show career will end. I have a few mares that may produce future champions. I look forward to that. So I guess my final dream is to gallop one of my Morgan horses along the Washington or Oregon sandy coast.

I fell in love this this horse over 9 years ago. I am beyond grateful and so very thankful to Olivia, Jennifer, and Maggie for entrusting me with this special guy. To say I am excited is a complete understatement!!!
Thank you to everyone who made this possible. I promise to love him and take great care of him, and keep you up to date with how he is doing.
And, we’ll see you in OKC in 2021!

From Olivia Doutt Piatt: Selling horses sometimes can be so hard because some of them you truly never want to part with. Quite a few years ago I had my eye on SpiceoLife Affirmation - I loved his look and the way he just seemed to enjoy showing. I was lucky enough to have a customer trust me to purchase this horse and we made the daring move of making him a walk and trot hunter for Maggie Fidanza. This horse taught us & her so much - how to win, loose, and attempt to be smarter than him, he's pretty brilliant and can make ya look like a fool any day of the week.
Reality came last winter that kids start to grow up and progression in the horse career needs to be made. "Avo" is very loved so this decision was not an easy one. Fast forward to a few weeks ago when we made the real official push to post this grand gelding for sale. Linda Collins was the FIRST one to message me to tell me how she'd loved this horse for years and was in hopes that one day he could be hers. After a zillion inquiries - her message stuck with me the most because she seemed to want this special guy for all of the right reasons.
Last weekend we officially made the deal and I can say that this is the best decision for BOTH parties but most importantly this horse. We wish you so much love and success with this guy - we will miss his gorgeous face at our stable and his need to always be the first one worked each day!

One happy trio right here!!! Got word that someone who was entered in the show going on today (10/24/2020) in McMinnville canceled, so we got to fill their spot!! Last minute 2020 horse show, here we are!!! Triv’s only show of the year, and it is also Triv and my anniversary today. And it’s a beautiful, big blue sky, sunny type day!!
Looks like it was a very successful show!

Lorinda Blue and Oregon MVP.
Can I just take a sec to brag on this horse?! He’s all tall, dark & handsome curves, plus a great thinker to boot. He hasn’t been off the home farm since March, but throw him in the trailer and he travels perfectly, is a gentleman for the farrier and an angel to be turned out with new friends. I couldn’t ask for a better 2 yr old. He’s certainly maturing into a sporty looking Morgan! 2021 is looking to be a fun year!

Tessa Beard - 10/24/2020 What a fun fun funnnn day with my pretty girl and barn family!!! Started the day with Delaney Beard showing Maggie and Allison Hall
showing Bailey in showmanship. Nicely done ladies! And then it was onto riding. Maggie was such a good girl in all of our classes. Boy have we come so far, all our hard work/trust/patience/determination/dedication together has paid off. She has so much confidence and she’s so happy as a western horse. She keeps getting better and better. So many years, months, hours, and minutes together to become a team. It’s all worth it and I’m looking forward to forever with my sweet girl. We are so ready for a fun 2021 show season (194 Days). But for now we are enjoying schooling shows for the winter/spring.
And can I say it felt soooo good to be at a show and having my hair in a show bun.
Congratulations Allison on such a great first show as an Amateur. Thank you Linda Collins for everything. I really appreciate everything you’ve taught me. Thank you Mom. Sandra Beard for being the best show mom ever. I truly appreciate everything you do for us. Love you!
Our placings:
First place Western Pleasure W/J/L 18-39
Second Place Western Pleasure W/J/L Open
Second Place Western Equitation W/J/L 18-39
Fourth Place Western Equitation W/J 18-39
Sunday 10/25/2020 was English day with Delaney and Hoolie and Karen and Marley. It was another beautiful, chilly, but sunny day. Being out with the horses and friends two days in a row felt like heaven in the middle of a crazy time.
Delaney had Showmanship, Pleasure and Equitation classes, eight classes total. She placed in every class, including two blues. She was also awarded English High Point Champion for the day in her 13-17 division. They have been working hard and it sure showed. So proud of you and Hoolie. Congratulations!
Karen and Marley! You looked wonderful and did great in their classes. You did it Karen! Congratulations on your first show with your girl.
Linda, thank you for a great day and the opportunity to go out and show off our Morgan’s and be out with our horsey people. Looking forward to doing it again next month.:
Allison Hall: The schooling show at Donida this past weekend was so fun! We competed in showmanship, western pleasure, and equitation. Bailey and I placed 4th and 5th in pleasure and then 1st in both equitation classes! What a great way to enter my first year as an amateur. The judge asked us to drop out stirrups in one of the classes, which is my absolute favorite. Congratulations @dbluvshorses and @tbeard11 for the amazing rides this weekend! Thank you @ella.gilbertt for taking such great pictures! Congratulations on your first show with your mare Karen!! Finally, thank you @jasonsltr450 @kmhall74 Sandra and @lcollins_timbercreekstables for the help and support! I can’t wait for the November show!

The Scandinavian and McKenzie Mattox
|
|
This is a very special team! Mckenzie Mattox and her Guy aka The Scandinavian!
He was the famous Morgan stallion who's video and photos went viral across Facebook when he visited his dying owners bedside. A year later a plea for him to find a home went out. This "east coast girl" knew nothing of this "west coast boy's" history or status. All we knew was he needed a safe spot to land. A few phone calls later and he was headed our way.
Guy longed to be with other horses and as a stallion it was limited. After some testing he was found to be sterile so we proceeded to move forward with gelding. We knew this would open more doors for him but little did we know how much!
Guy enjoys giving lessons to our younger riders and takes care of every mount, regardless of their experience or inexperience. But when he met McKenzie... well you know... the horse that chooses you... it was this 10 fold. He chose McKenzie and he will do anything for his person!
2016 was Guy's first Nationals. It was also McKenzie's...she didn't like the idea of being led around but she was with her Guy!
Fast forward a few years and she always had Guy but did show in other divisions and other seats. This year with so many uncertainties, so many ups and downs, twists and turns ...she wanted something solid in her life. She was loosing a bit of her spark. She returned to riding Guy quite often and a few months before we had a conversation. I told her that Guy gives you life as much as you give him. He won't be as competitive as everyone else and you may not win, but you will both look like you belong there. And if you want to show him there I would support you.
Her response was immediately, "I don't care about the ribbon as long as I can ride him and show him there."
This love connection is what it's all about! I am so very proud of both of them! I'm thankful for the opportunity that brought us all together. You both make a great team and you complete each other. For as long as this journey goes...I support you both! And I know Barb is your biggest cheerleader from the greatest seat in the house, she watches over both of you!
And walking away with 2nd in Showmanship and Most Senior Horse is not too shabby!
Thank you Colleen SaintLoup for this very special story about one of our native sons.

After a summer of disappointing cancellations for well-thought-out reasons during the 2020 pandemic, when Morgan Grand Nationals declared it would occur with special attention to national, state, and association protocols for everyone’s safety, many barns from the Pacific Northwest made the trip to Oklahoma City where the competition was as keen as ever. Experienced show ring stars, new teams, and people who had never shown on our breed’s biggest stage experienced exciting wins and memorable rides and drives.
At risk of omitting someone this writer will list barns she saw in the ring making victory passes and in the aisles preparing, celebrating, and passing by. Forgive me if I miss you. Everyone diligently wore their masks and if you didn’t sport silver bullets in your waistband how was I to know if you were the Lone Ranger? Blackburn, Kardia, LittleWood, Silver Mesa, Illahee, Fire Run, Sunchaser, Sutton, Woodlands, and Breckenridges all had stall fronts draped in a rainbow of ribbons, blue and red coolers, the traditional plaques, and gorgeous new horsehead trophies presented to World Champions.
Everyone was happy to be at a horse show, and the organizers and staff created an environment where exhibitors felt safe in protecting their health in uncertain times. Even a face mask couldn’t hide the grins of happy horsemen. Our MHAO was well-represented and the entire Northwest from Washington to Idaho and Oregon made their presence known. The horses were as beautiful as ever and the week in OKC was balm to the spirit. I am certain all who did travel are grateful to the home team for cheering us on. May next season bring all of us together again in our region and beyond.

Here are some highlights about the barns I know of that went to Nationals from our area. If I missed you, please send me some pictures, a little information about your experience at the show, and a list of any horses you had there. We will feature you in the next issue. Our thanks to all who represented our membership and the Northwest! We are very proud of you.

Eduardo Zavala Sanchez: Honor to who honor is deserved! As we are heading back to Oregon I am reflecting back on how fortunate we were last week. We showed our beloved steeds against the finest of the breed. But something special happened! I witnessed how every parent. trainer and fellow competitor helped one another.
From Monica Williamson: As we were unable to attend the Grand National Morgan show ... we still sent Siena's mount. Thinking he would just drive .... well then this happened. Two trainers from opposite ends of the country came together and put this team together. We are sincerely grateful to this family and extremely grateful to EDDIE for all of his hard work! And What an amazing rider!
Madeline von Ballmoos took the opportunity that was put in front of her for a "catch" ride. She worked hard and so did her "catch" horse, EQ The Boogie Monster (Vinnie). With the help of her talented parents and Katie Mair she became one with her horse. She is the 2020 Equitation 13 and under World Champion and won the 2020 UPHA Junior Saddle Seat Cup Finals. She won both by a unanimous vote of the judges. Megan von Ballmoos and Jason von Ballmoos are the proud parents and instructors of Maddie. Vinnie is trained by Blackburn Training and is proudly owned and loved by Siena and Monica Williamson.
Congratulations to Carole Bradford and Hollywood Godfather. They had an excellent drive and won a Reserve Championship.
Natalie Woodland had an excellent “catch” ride on Nuvolari in English Pleasure Youth. She had a blast! Despite very little time to prepare, they placed in the top 5 in the World Championship class.

Kallie Loreman won AMHA Reserve World Champion gold medal out of 35 horses! We are very proud of her!
Abby Jordan and Dominic You were Reserve Champion ranch riding at the Morgan Grand National and World Championship show! Very proud of them. Beautiful ride!
Huge Congratulations to Christine and Claire New on the purchase of AW Minutes to Midnights GCH! Thank you Jordan Inman from Shenanigan Stables for combining this fabulous pair together. We can't wait to see them in the ring! Enjoy.....he is absolutely the best boy. Off to Wylie, TX to a wonderful new family.
Congratulations Jaxon on his new horse, Morgan Quest Twighlight Fire! He wants to do reining and ranch riding. Huge thank you to agent and instructor David Silver and former trainer Sean Johnson. We are all very excited about her. World Champion Green horse reining and Reserve World Champion Snaffle bit reining. Grand National Champion snaffle bit reining.
Tango’s owner flew out this morning on her way back to Alabama. So she was kind enough to let eight-year-old Jaxon Craddock (Who showed tango before we bought him) step up and do the flag ceremony on this last night of the show. He was awesome. Jaxon was honored to carry the American flag. Thank you to his trainer Karen and The Wilson family for allowing Jaxon to have this experience aboard his all time favorite horse, QVM National Treasure!

Erin Silver:
Oct 9, Set up done, MULTIPLE practice rides done, horses clipped and bathed, ready for the start of MGN 2020 tomorrow! Western dressage suitability in West arena @ 8am (OKC time)....dressage rides throughout the day, and David & Quest in WP Gentleman's in Coliseum around 10:30am best guess, Kiersten in Showmanship in Performance arena around 1:30 ish.
Oct 10. Lots of western dressage ribbons today, some really good scores considering the year! Tomorrow morning brings 7 more rides, afternoon & evening we have several Western pleasure rides and then Versatility. Night all!
Oct 15. Today's Highlight was Emily and Ethan winning Res. World Ch English Trail! Trail is a challenge, and horses aren't robots. Celly struggled in English but redeemed himself with a much better go in the World Western Trail to finish 5th of 9. He shows great potential! T he afternoon brought me with Claire in Ranch Rail & pattern 3, both 2nd place finishes! I just LOVE my Claire bear mare!! Tomorrow we have World Ladies Western Pleasure in Coliseum in the afternoon, all well wishes gladly accepted, and tomorrow evening Emily & Ethan in the World Western Pleasure Amateur, again all good vibes appreciated! Night all!
Oct 17. What a week! We roll in on Monday...get settled, set up stalls, then start working horses. Show starts Saturday and rolls along fairly steady until about Wednesday....when it seems like it hits warp speed, and before you know it its Saturday night and you're packing up!
Numbers may have been a bit down, but the COMPETITION was not! Class sizes were still quite large in general! We had around 55 classes, 49 placings, 2 World titles, 2 Reserve World titles, 4 National titles, several Reserve National titles....7 horses, 6 riders, 8 Disciplines!
So VERY thankful to the MGN committee for going forward with the show, our AWESOME PEEPS for rising to the challenge of a VERY challenging year, and the ability to persevere! Safe travels home to all our friends, hoping 2021 brings a bit more normal!!
Kathy Carlson
I think the day after Grand Nationals ends is the saddest day of the year. As usual I had a great time these past two weeks seeing old friends and meeting new ones from across the country.
A HUGE thank you goes out to the show committee who in the midst of this crazy year didn't give up on putting on the Morgan world's biggest show of the year. Thank you
Betsy Wallen for heading up this hardworking and dedicated group of people.
Thank you to all the exhibitors, trainers and owners who brought their amazing horses to show. The quality of horses and exhibitors was top-notch.
This year was extra special because I got to show my new horse, Celly (Canabar Celebration). When one Morgan show after another got canceled in the PNW this year my goal of showing at Nationals seemed to be slipping through my fingers. Then 2 things happened, the first is that the usual qualifications for Nationals was changed, then secondly and more importantly my trainer, Erin Silver, believed in Celly and me. She worked hard to make sure we were ready for what would be our first Morgan show as a pair.
Her belief in us paid off with a top 10 placing in the World Champion Amateur Masters class. Celly's performances far exceeded my expectations this past week. I'm so proud of him.
Silver Mesa Morgans: Mike & Erin Silver, David Silver, Jeff & Kathy Carlson, Emily & Sydney Carlson, Kyndle & Kiersten Moore in their first year of showing (parents are Justin & Kim Moore). Nicki Smith from Oklahoma will join the Silver Mesa group, as will Amie Taber and her family from Idaho who own LittleWood Morgans.

From Suzanne Habernek after the show was done -
I can’t believe it...we’re in the homestretch. I’m finally able to think about what all just happened and how fortunate we all were to be in OKC!!
A very big thank you to all for making it happen...the committee members and all the people that made this show really truly happen! Seeing all of you, my friends, brings me such happiness...if only for this one time out of the year that we get to smile and laugh and enjoy “our” world together, I’m so thankful for this and all of you!
Like so many have said, this show makes you dream BIG and will give you some of life’s greatest accomplishments and it will also make you learn to accept the lows, all while making you work harder and dream even bigger for the next go around.
Being proud of our Team is an understatement...What we did this year with the dedication and support and perseverance of taking on the challenge of making Oklahoma our 1st and last show of 2020 is what makes me do what I do with all of you! We made it work, made adjustments along the way and had a week to work out the kinks that a full season gives us normally...all with complete faith and smiles in what we had set our goals for. Thank you for believing in our journey together!
I couldn’t or wouldn’t be where I am without my BESTEST partner in the whole wide world, Juan Gonzales. There are not enough words to say how much I appreciate and adore my very special friend and partner in all of this.
This year has challenged us but together, we made it and we did it “our way” and that is absolutely the only way I could imagine...together! I’m so blessed to get to do what we’ve done with you, dream big and then...even bigger, it’s just what we do! Kindred spirits we are.
Kurt, Thank you for giving such incredible vision and lots & lots of support with all and everything that happens at the farm.
Kristine, WOW...you rocked it sister!! So much fun ...even with the lack of sleep we never stopped laughing and loving what each day brought! Luis, Muchas Gracias my friend for all your hard work and big smiles! Cliff, Thank you for joining the “road warriors” crew!! And to the crew back home holding down the fort, a Gigantic Thank You! (Willy, Haylie, Kayla and Colton). And To my Fire Run Family, you jumped in and we all did it!! You said heck YES we are going and what a show we had!! Not just a show, we went to the ‘big show’ and rocked it!!! Thank you for having so much trust and faith in me with each one of your dreams and goals, along with your amazing horses! BIG LOVE to ALL.
We have been home from Oklahoma City and our grand national and world championship Morgan Horse Show now for four days and are still basking in the joy of the beautiful Morgan Horses everywhere at this wonderful horse show. Kudos and thank you’s to all who put it on and all who attended to make it spectacular as always.
Can’t let this year slip by without acknowledging and Thanking our amazing trainer Suzanne Haberek. We have been blessed for many years now to have had her as head trainer here at Fire Run Farm and every year just keeps getting better. Her talent and dedication to the Horses, the Farm, the staff, the riders and all of the families is truly amazing. Even through this very difficult year and the cancellation of all of our horse shows on the West Coast she powered through to our world show with nothing but a great attitude and positive thoughts for all of her riders. All were presented in a world championship way, every team. That’s just who she is! Thank you Suzie! great job as always, we all love you and let’s get onto 2021 ASAP.

Dallas Bolen: Well, its been a busy three days! Two horses, TWO World Champions! Sutton Remembrance GCH won the World Carriage Driving this afternoon, after quite a few times and a few Reserves, we finally won it under some stiff competition. Sutton Terra Cotta, at only 4 years old, won the training level open dressage. Did I mention he has never been in a dressage ring until Saturday morning? He won two tests and tied for first on the third. Pretty proud of both boys after not showing at all this year!!
The show is winding down now. Sitting in the stands remarking on a great few weeks here in Oklahoma City for the Morgan Grand Nationals. Seeing the faces of friends and seeing so many beautiful horses is just what my spirits needed! We were a small but mighty group this year. Two horses, two world Championships, one Reserve World, two Reserve Finals and 4 national championship blue ribbons. No 2020*** for us! The total numbers here were a bit lighter than normal, but the quality horses were still excellent! Now, to get home and start training for 2021!
Dallas Bolen
Liz Goldmann: It was time for the annual "Trailing Clouds of Glory" picture (the last one below). This year, Liz Goldmann got to do it with two of her horses! Sutton Remembrance GCH, World Champion Carriage Driving and Sutton Terra Cotta, World Champion Training Level Open. i am so proud of them!

Sierra Breckenridge: It is the last night of Morgan Grand Nationals. So tired, but so happy with how everyone has done! Dad had some good rides with his horses, placing top ten in worlds with Ellie in ranch riding and trail and top five in some of his grand national classes with KC. He had a good first ride at a show ever with Mars too. Ellie and I tried out reining again and got 3rd in world non pro! Flirt and Dante came out with reserve world championships from third and first level dressage as well as sport horse in hand. Finally Rebel exceeded all my expectations by earning double world championships in Intro and training level dressage and placing top five in his sport horse saddle class. Tomorrow we start the long drive home.
