"Dog Spelled Backwards"
Fifty years after landing on the moon and 30 years after the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope, do we still believe that we are alone? Is there a force greater than us? We are called to examine what constitutes spiritual "faith" -- and what that term may encompass for contemporary Unitarian Universalists.

Join Us for Worship This Sunday!
Sunday, August 25 at 10 a.m.

Worship Leader:  Rev. Tricia Hart, Developmental Senior Minister

"Beginning, Again"
Life has a way of circling us around to new things, or old things with a different appearance, again and again. We get lots of practice, when we're lucky, in figuring out what matters most. In this first worship service of her developmental ministry here in Burlington, Rev. Tricia will share some thoughts on the gifts and lessons of beginnings (and endings).

Worship Associate:  Doug Facey

Update from Dan House, President of the FUUSB Board of Trustees
One of my goals as president of the FUUSB Board of Trustees is to pull back the curtain that shrouds the work of the FUUSB board. My intention is to provide updates via the eNews after all of our board meetings. The agendas and minutes of all board meetings are available via the FUUSB website, but I also understand that minutes and agendas do not typically reflect the heartfelt conversations that happen at board meetings. The FUUSB is blessed with an amazing board of thoughtful, talented, and dedicated trustees. When you see your trustees wearing yellow name tags on Sunday, please thank them for their efforts and ask them about the work of the board.

In August, at our annual retreat and first regular board meeting, we have been focused on prioritizing the important tasks of the board and getting to know Rev. Tricia Hart. It is safe to say that every member of the board is excited to get to know Rev. Tricia and develop a working relationship that will help us move toward our developmental goals and meet the ministerial needs of our congregants and community. Her extensive experience as a UU minister and her calm leadership has already helped to create a sense of optimism.

The one thing that is abundantly clear to me as we begin this new phase of our journey: It is going to take the input, effort, and faith of all of us to move the FUUSB towards our vision for the Society. We are a great community because of the great things our members have done to bring us to where we are today. I look forward to working with you all to foster a Society that enriches every one of our spirits.

Peace,

Dan House, President of the FUUSB Board of Trustees

Help Grow Souls! Help with Faith Formation!
Erika Reif, Director of Lifespan Faith Development

It's that time of year again! Fall is right around the corner and we are in the process of recruiting stewards for the 2019-20 program year. We need volunteers to work with every age group from preschool through high school.

Whether you have taught in the past or not, here is your opportunity to deepen your own faith while helping others form theirs. You do not have to be a parent to participate, and volunteering with children or youth is a great way to strengthen the ties between younger families and the rest of our beloved community!

If you are interested in leading or assisting in a preschool through 7th grade classroom or acting as an advisor to our YUUth group, please take a moment to  fill out this form and Erika, our Director of Lifespan Faith Development, will be in touch to discuss the specific opportunities that match your interests.

Seeking Instrumentalists
piano_guitar_hybrid.jpg
Do you play an instrument? Would you like to play for a Sunday service?

We are looking for instrumentalists who would be willing to share their talents with others during worship. Perhaps you play the flute or the shakuhachi, a guitar or an erhu; we'd love to hear from you.

If you're interested, please email our music director, James Stewart at  [email protected].

Faith Development for Children and Youth
Erika Reif, Director of Lifespan Faith Development

It may feel like summer, but fall is almost here, and so it is time to register children and youth for classes and YUUth group!

I invite you all to register your children from the littlest nursery goers through seniors in high school with this  link to our database.

It is very helpful to our planning process to get children and youth registered at the beginning of the year whenever possible, so your prompt action will be greatly appreciated!

Please contact me with any questions you may have about this process at  [email protected] .

Shawl Ministry
Calling all knitters and crocheters (also people who sew): The shelves in our shawl closet are nearly bare! We need not only "traditional" prayer shawls, but we are also looking to expand our offerings to baby blankets for child dedications, shawls or little blankets for children, shawls that would appeal to tweens and teens. Soft washable yarn is important. For ideas see  shawlministry.com  or Ravelry. Questions? Contact Lynn Douglas or Elizabeth Clayton.

Childcare Providers Needed for the Fall!
In order to warmly welcome families with young children to our congregation we offer Sunday morning childcare for infants and toddlers all year round, and for children of all ages in the summer. Taking a monthly shift in the Nursery is a great way to serve the community, connect with families, and make a little money! Here's a  link to the job description.  If you think you would be a good fit, contact Margo Whitcomb, Faith Development Assistant, at  [email protected] .

Poetry & Music Service
chalice by river Judy Brook

The annual Poetry & Music Service will be on October 6 at 10 a.m. and we would love to have you participate. If you have poems you have written, favorite poems to read, songs to sing or music to play, please contact Judy Brook at 802-865-0557 or  [email protected] .

Emma's Revolution Concert
Emma's Revolution: Saturday, October 26, 7 p.m., First UU, Burlington. SAVE THE DATE  and consider Volunteering. We'll have a need for volunteers for ticket taking, set up and clean up, food table, and ushers. The event will be a fundraiser for community groups affiliated with our Justice & Outreach Ministries, including Migrant Justice and Vermont Interfaith Action. Please spread the news. For more info, contact Gene Bergman.

Run for JUMP on September 21
Wanda Hines, JUMP Director

Join us for the RUN (or Walk!) for JUMP 2019 Fundraiser -  Saturday, September 21 at North Beach in Burlington at 10 am - *register 9 am*

JUMP greatly values and needs your continued involvement, and that is why we are reaching out to you, to help make a difference in the lives of vulnerable Vermonters.

JUMP is doing important work:
* Did you know that transportation challenges have an effect on many working poor neighbors? Transit assistance is a critical part of the solution, and that's where you can help.
* JUMP is the only nonprofit providing gasoline assistance, spending annually over $30,000 on transportation support. JUMP also provides bus passes and vouchers for bicycles.

This year the run has set a goal of raising $15,000 to support the work of JUMP.  Click here to register online today!  RUN (or Walk!) for JUMP 2019 Fundraiser

You can Walk, Run, or make a donation TODAY in support of RUN For JUMP. Please mail checks to JUMP (38 S. Winooski Ave., Burlington, VT 05401) or donate online.
