Dear Neighbor,
Wearing Masks Saves Lives

Despite the state's decision to end the mask mandate, wearing a mask and keeping a physical distance are still the best ways to protect ourselves from the spread of the virus, even for those that have received the vaccine. Abandoning precautions will only extend the pandemic and endanger lives.

Remember, we’re contending with new variants of COVID-19 that are more infectious and deadly. The vaccines we have today are not as effective against the new variants. If we stop wearing masks and those variants spread, we’re undermining the efforts we've made in vaccinations.

The City will continue to require masks in all City-owned buildings, including libraries and parks (when physical distancing is impossible).

Committee on Emergency Preparedness Holds First Meeting

The Committee on Emergency Preparedness met for the first time last Friday. We began planning how we'll conduct our work over the next several months.

The first step we've taken is to begin collecting questions and comments about the winter storm preparation and response from residents. It’s critical that we hear from you about your experiences so that we gain a comprehensive understanding of the problems that occurred before, during, and after the storm.

There are three ways you can submit your questions and comments:

Residents can submit comments and/or questions in English and Spanish through March 31. You can also watch the committee meetings every Friday at 10 a.m. on TVSA, the City website, or Facebook.

More information about the committee can be found here.

Advocating for Sidewalks, Public Transit

I was honored to address Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg this past Monday at the National League of Cities' Conference. I used my time to push for more federal dollars for sidewalks and public transit. You can view my remarks here.

As one of the largest cities in the U.S., and one with some of the highest poverty levels, we need transportation options that connect all San Antonio residents to opportunity. I'm hopeful that having a former mayor at the helm of the Department of Transportation will help us connect our community to opportunity — because ultimately that's what transportation is.
Yours in public service,

City of San Antonio creates text alert notification for COVID-19 vaccine availability
The City of San Antonio has partnered with some of the Bexar County vaccine distribution sites to create a vaccine availability text alert system to keep the community informed about the release of more COVID-19 vaccines.

Individuals who decide to opt-in, can text VACCINE to 55000 or in Spanish VACUNA to 55000 starting today. By signing up they will receive a text notifying them which locations have available appointments. Opting in to this text alert system will not sign you up for a vaccine or add you on to a wait list. This is an additional method to inform the community when new appointments are available.
