We do not learn from experience... we learn from reflecting on experience.- John Dewey

Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to do or what to believe.

This course focuses on the key components of critical thinking:

  • Analysis (which includes learning to see, to connect, to question why, to examine beliefs, to count, to measure, to compare).
  • Judgment (which includes reflecting on experience, projecting possible consequences, morally considering).
  • Decision-Making (understanding how to make decisions, monitoring one’s decisions).

Critical thinking is not about memory or accumulating information.  Instead it is about thinking and acting.  In other words: study, problem solve, decide, act and evaluate consequences.

This class is ideal for front line leaders, and for formal leaders who want to develop and promote critical thinking in their teams. You are welcome to take back all that you learn and apply it to in-services, discussions, or daily work.  The handbook provided will include all reproducible materials.

About the Presenter: LaVrene Norton, MSW, Action Pact Executive Leader

LaVrene’s degrees in philosophy and social work position her well to present on this topic. A pioneer and champion of the Household Model, LaVrene has been guiding organizations on their culture change journeys since 1984. She is recognized as the nation’s foremost organizational change facilitator in long-term care and has taken her expertise to Ireland and Australia as well. In addition to building curriculum for the broad series of Action Pact workshops, intensives and consulting, LaVrene has led the Action Pact team in the development of a deep catalog of culture change and Household Model literature, workbooks and DVDs, notably In Pursuit of the Sunbeam which she co-authored with Steve Shields.
