The Auto Department at DMACC started with the Auto Mechanics Diploma program in 1967, and was located in West Des Moines before moving to the Ankeny campus in 1969.
The Auto Department has expanded the degree programs offered at DMACC, which are accredited through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). The Automotive Department at DMACC includes the following programs:
- Automotive Mechanics Technology (AMT): student will work on a variety of vehicle makes and models.
- GM ASEP (General Motors Automotive Service Education Program): students will specialize in Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac vehicles.
- MOPAR CAP (Career Automotive Program): students will specialize in Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and FIAT vehicles.
- Ford ASSET (Automotive Student Service Educational Training): students will specialize in Ford and Lincoln vehicles.
- Honda PACT (Professional Automotive Career Training): students will specialize in Honda and Acura vechicles. This program is our newest addition and will be starting in fall 2020.
- Subaru Online Training- this is an additional online training program available to students enrolled in any of our auto programs.
All of the Auto programs are on the Ankeny campus in Building 13, with the exception of Ford ASSET, which is housed at the Urban campus. When students complete their auto program of choice, they receive an Associate of Applied Science. Our programs are very hands-on; students get the chance to apply what they are learning in the classroom to vehicles. Student typically spend 50% of their time in the classroom and 50% of their time in the lab working on vehicles. Currently, Building 13 is undergoing a renovations and expansion to better accommodate the space needed for student to work on vehicles; when complete, Building 13 will be the Karl Chevrolet Automotive Technology Center.
The Automotive Mechanics Technology is often referred to as “general auto”. This is our most popular program since it has a fall start date and a spring start date, whereas the other programs only start in the fall. DMACC’s auto programs are unique in that we are the only community college in the state to offer internship-based auto programs. With GM ASEP, MOPAR CAP, Ford ASSET, and Honda PACT, students will spend almost half of their time at the dealership completing their internships that require they perform what they have learned in the classroom in the real world under the guidance of a mentor. This is a great opportunity for students to earn while they learn because they are getting credit and an hourly wage while on internship. If the internship goes well, students may continue their employment with their dealership after they have graduated.
The job outlook for the students who complete the program is good because auto mechanics/technicians are in high demand in Iowa. Our graduates have gone on to start their own repair facilities, as well as work in dealerships and independently owned shops, or become auto instructors.

Clint Dudley
Automotive Entrepreneur, Owner of Shade Tree Auto
Honestly, I never intended to go to DMACC. After high school, I followed my girlfriend to central Iowa where I was promptly traded for a better model. On my own, and wondering what life would bring, I enrolled in a few auto classes to find joy in a hobby, and credits to be spent towards an “
actual
” degree in the future. One semester turned into two, and I had a job offer by my second year. My career was satisfying and lucrative, and I graduated with little student loan debt.
I was able to purchase my first home in Johnston, it was not by accident that the property had a large detached garage, complete with concrete floors and an overhead heater. It was my accountant that recommended starting a “business” to help expense certain parts of the property. The garage was canopied by a large soft Maple, and with the shrug of shoulders, Shade Tree Auto became the name that ended up on the tax forms.

A few friends and family were my first customers and referrals came quickly. I quit my job to commit to the business full time and outgrew the space shortly afterward. I returned to DMACC for business classes at night and was rewarded with a business plan that I used to secure financing for a move to a rental spot in Grimes. 12 years, a business partner that came and went, and 3 expansions lead to one conclusion- Shade Tree Auto needed its own building. In 2017, we moved into a 13,000 sqft facility on Highway 141.
With a 2-year degree, I’ve been able to start and grow one of the most awarded automotive repair shops in the world. I’ve continued to use DMACCs resources, through their WTED program, ongoing training, and most recently, as one of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses graduates. I’ve met some of the most amazing people in my life through DMACC, proving that content is only a fraction of what the school can provide for you.
