A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
|
In Parashat Eikev, God sets out requirements for His people and then succinctly expresses God's personality. In this regard, Moses said that God wants you:
[T]o revere the Lord your God, to walk only in His paths, to love Him, and to serve your God with all your heart and soul, keeping the Lord's commandments and laws...for good....For the Lord your God is God supreme and Lord supreme, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who shows no favor and takes no bribes, but upholds the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and befriends the stranger....You too must befriend the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
The wonderful thing here is that God could choose to do anything with His power, and what does He choose to do? God chooses to take care of the least fortunate segments of our society, the orphan, the widow, and the stranger. The message is one of the most beautiful pieces of Torah. No matter how great you are, you must always care for the less fortunate.
I imagine that when unlimited power is attained, humility and empathy are the hardest emotions to hold on to. Countless books, plays and movies tell stories of power corrupting even the nicest human beings.
But there is another piece to the above section that adds to the story. Moses reminds the Israelites that God had great love for our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and that God seeks connection with us, to this day, based on his love for them. In part, God loved them, because they created and continued community.
We are doing this at the JCC. This past week we had a Shiva minyan, two Yahrtzeit Minyans, a memorial service, a Bar Mitzvah and Havdallah services.
We had 140 people in the JCC for our Back to the Catskills program featuring comedian Larry Donsky and a singing duo, the Jersey Chix. We participated with the Ocean County Federation in bringing Israeli films to Southern Ocean County.
Thursday evening we had a Woman's Rosh Chodesh event at the Foundation. It was led by Sheri Horowtiz-Jay and Ruth Miller, and attracted 40 women, children, and grandchildren each of whom made dough for Challah.
Tomorrow morning we will have about 15 people to my class on conflict resolution the rabbinic way. On Saturday morning we will be honoring Aaron Lombardi for his dedication to the JCC, which he expresses by regularly reading Torah. (Aaron has also been seen helping in the kitchen and doing whatever needs to be done.)
God created the world. God put life in motion. God made the first communities. God wants us to continue to build community in addition to taking care of those less fortunate than us. God also wanted a homeland for the Jewish people. We will be visiting that Homeland, Israel, next summer from August 2 - 13. This is a good time to go because it will enable our congregants to bring their children and grandchildren.
Our last trip to Israel was a great success. We want to make more memories next year and to continue connecting our congregants with our homeland. Reach out to me for details and look for an email that contains the specifics of the trip.
Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

THE WEEK THAT WAS....
|
Another wonderful summer weekend at the JCC....prayers at the beach, a special family bar mitzvah, a fun filled night of jokes and song.
Shabbat at the Beach brought over 200 people to Loveladies for a beautiful Friday evening of prayer and community.
It is quite a sight as folks come over the dune and to see generations of families enjoying these special LBI memories.
Thank you to Alan & Todd Jay for making the Shabbat bags.
Remember the Catskills Sunday night rocked the house with laughter and song. Larry Donsky played the room with one joke after another and the Dixie Chix took us from Barbra to Connie Francis to Karen Carpenter. Over 140 patrons finished the evening with desserts, snacks and drink. Thank you to David & Karen Shatz for chairing the evening and to their helpers: Margie Fagan,
Beverly Miller, Michael Miller, Irene Babst, Michael Babst, Diane Buskirk, Jill Denker, Arlene Schragger, Paul Levine, Marlene Matz and Diane Hoffman and Barney Hoffman.
The
Book Group had an interesting discussion of the book "The Lost Girls of Paris". September 16th book is: "
Lilac Girls" by Martha Hall Kelly.
Tuesday night a nice crowd came to the Regal Theater to see the film "Shoelaces
"
as part of the Ocean County Jewish Federation's Film Festival. Thanks to the Federation for bringing this poignant story to our area and to all the JCC people to came to see the movie and those who enjoyed dinner beforehand. Special kudos to JCC & Federation members Arlene and Fred Schragger for their work on this project and to Bob Block, Mark Chazin, Diane Hoffman and Charlie Moss for helping with the registration table.
Note: Did the actor playing Reuben look familiar?
BAKING CHALLAH AT THE LBI FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS & SCIENCE
Thursday evening was a great deal of fun. As part of the Rosh Chodesh program so ably organized by Sheri Horowitz Jay, Ruth Miller taught a large group of would-be bakers how to mix all the items necessary to make challah. She set up two large tables with mixing bowls for each family as well the pre-measured ingredients. She then carefully instructed everyone on how to put it all together. Every family left with a ball of dough to put into their refrigerator and instructions on how to do the rest of the steps at home. As is done at each Rosh Chodesh, Sheri asked everyone to go around the room and give their name, the name of their mother and the name of their grandmothers so they can connect to the women of generations past. With multiple generations at this event, it was wonderful to see the children participate in this ceremony and also to see them making challah.
Thank you to Ruth Miller for being such a patient teacher, Patty Block, JCC liaison to the Foundation, for making the arrangements, Executive Director of the Foundation, Daniella Kerner for her warm welcome and Rose & Erika Valentine for setting out the refreshments.

Aaron was brought to the JCC of LBI by his grandfather Phil as a little boy. As a bar mitzvah he showed a natural talent for reading Torah and over the years has been a regular Torah reader at our synagogue. He and his sister Kayla & brother Zach were students at Solomon Schechter Day School.
Aaron will be graduating form Central Regional High School in Berkeley Township this June and in September will be studying engineering at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. Aaron is the son of Jon & Patty Lombardi.
