Your Community Brief from Oak Ridge High School

Later this afternoon will mark the end of what has turned out to be a successful first two weeks of the 2019-2020 school year. Thank you to all of our students, faculty, staff, and Oak Ridge families for helping to get the new year off quite smoothly. I do want to remind our school community that this past Monday we have already kicked off our after school tutoring program (below) and that ORHS does firmly comply with the OCPS Student Code of Conduct which includes the dress code.
This week we announced both our 2019 Teacher of the Year and our 2019 Support Person of the year (stories below). Should you happen to see either
Ms. Williams or
Mr. Ford on campus in the coming days, please take a moment to congratulate them. This is a major achievement based upon nominations of their peers. Congratulations to both of them!
Finally, good luck to our varsity football team as they play at home this evening vs. Ocoee High School's Knights (7:00PM). I know
Coach Johnson and his staff have our team ready to go so please come on out tonight and cheer on our Pioneers!

Teacher of the Year
Latorrie was born in Gainesville, FL and is a graduate of the University of Central Florida. Shortly after graduating, she began her teaching career at Oak Ridge High School. Over the course of several years, Latorrie taught various math courses before expanding her role at Oak Ridge, as Instructional Math Coach. In addition, she is the head girls' basketball coach. During her 5-year tenure as head girls' basketball coach, Latorrie led the Lady Pioneers to back-to-back district championships, regional championships, and two state final four appearances for the first time in school history during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 season.
Latorrie is committed to student success in the classroom and in life! Colleagues, families, and the community play an important role in her beliefs and convictions and strives for optimum success through establishing strong connections. She believes that student success is created through meaningful relationships.
The Teacher of the Year program recognizes and honors the contributions of outstanding classroom teachers who demonstrate a superior capacity to inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities. Out of more than 200 instructional personnel representing each school in the district, five finalists will be chosen later and one person will be awarded the distinction of Orange County Public Schools Teacher of the Year.

Support Person of the Year
As a native Floridian, Coach Ford originated in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Growing up, he always had a passion and a focused interest in the field of health and fitness. In his early career, he had the opportunity to work for Broward County Schools for over 10 years with experience in working with severely emotionally disturbed students. During that time, he gained the knowledge of learning about patience and resilience in his work ethic. In 2009, he relocated to Orlando. Before arriving at Oak Ridge High School, Coach Ford managed the wellness department at the YMCA and functioned as a personal trainer.
With the commencement of the 2019-2020 academic school year, Coach Ford starts his fifth year with OCPS. During his tenure, he has always worked as a support person in addition to serving in the positions of Head Coach for Boys Cross Country/Track & Field and Assistant Coach for Weightlifting (boys and girls). He also volunteers his time and services to assist collegiate athletes with advice and knowledge about sports performance.

Thank you to our amazing cafeteria staff. Service with a smile! They are ready to serve our students every day nutritious breakfast and lunch meals!
Many do not know this, but our kitchen also serves as a central control kitchen helping to prepare cold meals for many other schools on top of serving our Pioneers!

Swim Team
Check out Coach Febo (also our School Resource Officer with the Orange County Sheriffs Office) in action with our swim team! Swim season runs from August through October. Come on out and see us at a meet - the water is perfect!

Acceptable Use Policy

All high school students have until Monday, August 26th to sign the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) on studentid.ocps.net. At 12:01 AM on August 27th, high school accounts will expire if they have not signed the AUP in advance.

Elevate Orlando
The Elevate Class has begun at Oakridge High School and Mr. Rodriguez is starting strong!
THE CLASS - In an ELEVATE Orlando classroom, students focus on 13 Character Qualities and Life Skills.
THE MENTOR - An ELEVATE teacher-mentor spends 50% of his or her time outside the classroom, discovering their talents, interests, and hopes through quality time. This teacher-mentor is a positive role model, changing the trajectory of a student's future.
THE ADVENTURE - Through new and challenging experiences, students push themselves while learning teamwork and leadership skills.

Friday's Motivational Moment!
NEVER GIVE UP
There was an old mule and one day he accidentally fell into his farmer's well. The farmer evaluated the situation and thought to himself, that neither the well nor the old mule was really worth the effort to save them. Thus, he decided to haul over dirt to simply bury the old mule in the well and be done with it.
So the farmer called his neighbors and together they started to shovel dirt into the well. The old mule was quite terrified and hysterical in the beginning. But soon one hopeful idea came to his mind - every time when a shovel of dirt landed on his back, he would just shake it off and step up!
He repeated these words to himself again and again:
"Shake it off and step up." This way he could manage the panic and encourage himself. After some time, the mule stepped over the well's wall at the top. Although terribly tired, he was the winner - he had saved his own life. He decided to face his adversity positively and not to give up, and thus he won.
The lesson for our Pioneers?
What seemed hopeless in the beginning to the old mule turned out not to be. Owing to his confidence and persistence he succeeded. Challenges will come up this school year, but don't panic and don't even think about giving up. Oak Ridge has all kinds of support available to each of our students whenever needed, but the decision to win . . . to succeed . . . is up to you! Please take advantage of all that ORHS offers this year and never hesitate to ask for help if you need it!!
