Betty Jordan, vice dean of undergraduate and global programs at the College of Nursing, helped lead a special COVID-19 response webinar titled, "Keeping Nursing Students Safe in Clinicals" on Sept. 1.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing and CastleBranch co-sponsored the informative online presentation.

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) will conduct an onsite accreditation survey of the Baccalaureate, Master’s, and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs at the USF College of Nursing on Jan. 20 - 22, 2021.

College of Nursing interim dean Usha Menon was among 11 nursing leaders who signed on to promote the well-being of nurses nationwide.

Members of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing recently voted to endorse the Call to Action, which urges academic nurse leaders to "promote practices to enhance optimal well-being, resilience and suicide prevention in schools of nursing across the U.S." Read the document here.
Bull Nurse alumna Jean Lucas, the Chief Nursing Officer of the Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Venice, is part of the 2020 class of fellows for the American Academy of Nursing.

Dr. Lucas will be inducted into the prestigious group during a virtual ceremony in late October.

Bull Nurse alums Lakeshia Cousin and Harleah Buck co-wrote a guest editorial in the Journal of Gerontological Nursing calling for social justice in gerontological nursing when caring for older African-Americans.

The National Institutes of Health has approved an Exploratory/Developmental Grant to fund an ongoing USF research project that uses facial expression software to help measure pain felt by newborns. Vice Dean of Graduate Programs Denise Maguire is a co-investigator for the project.
College of Nursing Assistant Professor Marcia Johansson has been elected to serve as the membership chair on the Florida Nurse Practitioner Network's incoming 2021 board of directors.

The position became official at FNPN's virtual annual membership meeting on Aug. 22.
College of Nursing Assistant Professor Andrew Bugajski was interviewed by the Tampa Bay Times about a USF research project studying the development of a wearable device to detect COVID-19 progression.

The device could give warning signs for a severe infection.
Angelica Bernal spent nearly two months caring for COVID-19 patients in New York City hospitals during the height of the coronavirus crisis there.

Named in the USF Heroes project, Angelica was recognized for her contributions to helping those impacted by COVID-19.
Doctor of Nursing Practice students Ashley Rehmann and Chelsea Deluca were named USF Heroes for their work in helping to strengthen infection control measures at long-term care facilities.

The pair lead teams performing COVID-19 risk assessments.
College of Nursing team members showed off their best USF-inspired masks and face shields during a lighthearted activity at the August Faculty Council meeting where participants took turns reading an adapted Green Eggs and Ham passage to encourage mask wearing this semester.
USF Bull Nurse student nurse anesthetists won the coveted top prize at this year's AANA 2020 College Bowl.

The annual contest at the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Congress is the ultimate match-up in anesthesia knowledge. Congrats to the College of Nursing SRNAs who brought home the virtual trophy!
The Next Generation Harvey has arrived at the College of Nursing. Harvey is the cardiopulmonary patient simulator that replicates nearly any cardiac disease by varying blood pressure, pulses, heart sounds, murmurs and breath sounds.

The manikin can simulate up to 50 patient scenarios.
The College of Nursing helped coordinate training in mental health education and awareness for Hillsborough County school nurses returning to schools during the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 350 school nurses attended the event, which provided continuing education training to school nurses before starting the new school year.
Johairis "Joy" Ayala-Falcon, a simulation operations specialist at the USF Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) visited the College of Nursing in August to offer some hands-on moulage training.

Her practical moulage tips helped to make the mock injuries more realistic.
Results from the 2020 Civility Survey are in. The College of Nursing's overall score increased from 67 to 71 in the 20-statement questionnaire.

The 4-point gain means the college's workplace civility index improved from being described as "mildly healthy" to "moderately healthy."

Congratulations to PhD student Kailey Rinaldi, who will be receiving a $500 Love of Learning Award from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

The award helps fund post-baccalaureate professional development for Phi Kappa Phi members. Rinaldi says the money will be used toward her dissertation.
All USF faculty, staff, and students with a valid USF ID can visit hand sanitizing vending machines on all three campuses to get two complimentary spray bottles each month.

At the College of Nursing, look for a hand sanitizing vending machine on the first-floor hallway near the Center for Advanced Clinical Learning.
A pallet of personal protective equipment was delivered to MOSI and picked up by the College of Nursing thanks to help from county and state partners.

The PPE acquisition included 3,000 surgical masks, 400 face shields, 500 gowns, and 3,000 N95 masks for faculty and students to use during the 2020 fall semester.
'Promise' Partnership with Sulphur Springs Community Renewed

The College of Nursing has renewed its partnership agreement with the Sulphur Springs Neighborhood of Promise's Better Parents Better Health program.

The collaboration allows college leaders to coordinate and provide health-related seminars for the community.

"It's partnerships like this that give me hope. We are uniquely bonded together to address some of the glaring health and social needs of our community," said Jacqueline Coffie Leeks, executive director of the Sulphur Springs Neighborhood of Promise.
During the past year, the college has led programs on topics such as healthy eating, physical fitness, dental health, and mental health.

"We make a difference in these partnerships," said Susan Perry, Vice Dean for Faculty and Community Affairs at the College of Nursing.
Congratulations to Michelle Canale and Karla Maldonado, who will be serving on the 2020-2021 Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists (FANA) Board of Directors. Beginning Oct. 10, Dr. Canale will serve as vice president and Dr. Maldonado will serve as a director.
