September 12:  Managing the College Admission Frenzy - Why "Fit" Matters

The college admissions process can be a source of stress and anxiety for students and parents alike. This research-based workshop addresses many of the important questions we hear from families. What do college rankings really measure? Are students who attend more selective colleges better off later in life? What is "fit" and why does it matter?

Participants will learn practical strategies to help reduce unnecessary pressure around the college admissions process and ways to support their student's overall well-being and readiness for life in college and beyond. Participants will leave with practical strategies to apply at home and at school.

Spanish and Chinese interpretation will be provided upon request.

This program is presented by the San Mateo Union High School District in partnership with Stanford University's Challenge Success program and the GATE Parents Group.

San Mateo High School in the News

San Mateo High School was featured in an article in today's San Jose Mercury News in regards to their new cell phone policy.

" As the second day of school let out at San Mateo High, administrators stood in the rotunda, waving plate-sized silver disks that students tapped with green-and-gray pouches.

Welcome to the newest front in the battle against cell phones in schools: San Mateo High and others across America have begun locking up students' iPhones and Samsung Galaxies in opaque magnetic Yondr pouches designed to allow students to keep their phones in their possession but remove the temptation, and the opportunity, to break the rules by using them."

The Rotary Youth Exchange Scholarship Program

Do you have a child who is interested in learning a new language or meeting new people? The Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year. By sharing their own culture and embracing a new one, students help foster global understanding-and learn a great deal about themselves and their home country in the process.

Youth Exchange is a study-abroad opportunity for high school and gap year students who spend anywhere from a few weeks to a full year as an international student hosted by local Rotary clubs.

Two programs are available:
  1. The Youth Exchange Scholarship (One academic year)
  2. The Short Term, Family-to-Family Summer Program (One month)
Exchanges are for people ages 15-19 who:
  • Have demonstrated leadership in their school and community
  • Are flexible and willing to try new things
  • Are open to cultural differences
  • Can serve as an ambassador for their own country

Interested students should visit the Rotary Youth Exchange website.
