If you are a civic club president, non-profit director, faith-based leader,  business owner, or education head in  Kashmere Gardens, Fort Bend  Houston, Magnolia Park - Manchester, and Sunnyside, the Neighborhood Support Team (NST) needs your input. The Planning and Development Department (P&D) will rely on the NST to be partners in the Complete Communities planning process, provide guidance on the public engagement approach and ensure widespread participation from the community. Tell us what you think by completing this survey

Do you need a will? 
A Will Clinic will take place on Thursday, August 22 (jueves, 22 de agosto), from 8 am - 2 pm, at Acres Home Multi-Service Center, 6719 West Montgomery, 77091.

Alief 

Alief Super Neighborhood Council (ASNC) Monthly Meetings:   The ASNC, as a community, decides on improvements for neighborhood needs. The input and participation by individuals and organized groups, representing Alief's neighborhood, is vital to demonstrate our commitment and dedication to city government, area businesses, and institutions. M eetings are held at 6:30 pm on the fourth Tuesday of each month at  Alief Community Center,  11903 Bellaire Blvd.,  77072, at the c orner of Bellaire and Kirkwood. The Empty Shelter Project: The Empty Shelter Project will offer free pet spaying and neutering at the Alief Community Center, 11903 Bellaire Blvd., 77072, on August 24. Over 450 dog and cat spay/and neuter surgeries are anticipated. Each animal also receives free vaccinations and a microchip. T he Empty Shelter project needs volunteers to cover shifts for this event. Sign up  here  to volunteer, and share the information with pet lovers, family, and friends! 
 
International Management District Livable Centers Planning Study: A Livable Centers presentation will be held on Friday, August 23. A report on the planning study will be given from 6 - 9 pm at  Youngblood Intermediate School, 8410 Dairy View Lane, 77072 and at the SPARK Park and Nature Center, 6 - 9 pm.  The study seeks to identify ways the District can create a more  walkable, mixed-use, transit-served neighborhood that is both a destination and a great place to live, work, and play. The Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) manages the Livable Centers Program, which is funded by federal transportation dollars. H-GAC is leading the planning study in partnership with  the International Management District.
 
Westside Police Divisional PIP (Positive Interaction Program):  Community involvement in crime prevention meets third Thursday of each month except in July, August, and December. The n ext meeting is September 19, 6:30 - 8 pm at the Westside Command Station, 3203 South Dairy Ashford, 77082.

Fort Bend Houston


FBHSN General Announcement:  Fort Bend Houston Super Neighborhood's monthly meeting is at 7 pm, on August 8, at Ridgemont Clubhouse, 5111 Ridgecreek Circle, 77053.

Gulfton

Gulfton Super Neighborhood Council: The Gulfton Super Neighborhood Council meetings are held every third Monday of the month. A super neighborhood meeting was held on August 12th at the Southwest Multi-Service Center, 6400 High Star Drive, from 12 - 1 pm. Opportunity Zones: The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act created an economic development tool to spur long-term investment and job creation in economically-distressed communities, through tax benefits. Together for Safer Roads Public Meeting: Together for Safer Roads held a meeting on Wednesday, July 31, at the Southwest Multi-Purpose Center to discuss short term and long term road safety solutions on Hillcroft, and to support Jane Long, YES Prep, and KIPP Connect summer interns. Details here.



C.H.A.T. for Change Save the date of September 14, at 6 pm, for Culture of Health - Advancing Together's (C.H.A.T.) annual Rise from Refuse gala. Northeast Houston Farmers Market Launch CelebrationThe Northeast Houston Farmer's Market was launched on Saturday, August 17, at Kashmere Gardens Elementary School, 4901 Lockwood Dr., 77026. 

The grand opening featured local products, kid-friendly activities, cooking demonstrations, and more. The market will be open every two weeks.

Community Outreach: We have been meeting with several organizations, non-profits, and residents in the Magnolia Park-Manchester area to learn more about the community. If you are active in the neighborhoods of Magnolia Park, Harrisburg, Manchester, and Smith Addition, we would love to talk with you to hear about the work you do. Community Meetings: In addition to the meetings we highlighted in the July newsletter , the Smith Addition Civic Club meets every second Monday from 6 - 7 pm at the Jesus Christ Holy Temple Church at 8808 Gibbons St., 77012. We encourage residents to attend their local civic club or Super Neighborhood to learn more about how to be active in their community.

 
Get Moving Farmer's Market: The Houston Health Department is holding Get Moving Houston Farmers Markets throughout the city in 2019.The market operates from 11 am - 2:30 pm. Come check out the market for healthy produce! WIC participants are eligible to sign up for a $30 voucher. Those with SNAP benefits can also participate in the Double Up Houston dollar-for-dollar match program. Details here.

Near Northside

Northside Back to School Health and Resource FairSaturday, August 3, 8 am was an annual Back to School Health and Resource Fair with State Representative Jessica Farrar at Moody Park Community Center, 3725 Fulton Street, 77009. Free health screenings, backpacks with school supplies, Zumba and aerobic exercise demonstrations, giveaways, and prizes were available. Partners included the M.D. Anderson Family YMCA, Wesley Community Center, LISC Houston, GO Neighborhoods, Houston Parks and Recreation Department, Commissioner Adrian Garcia, State Senator Carol Alvarado, State Farm Insurance Company, BakerRipley Leonel Castillo Community Center, Wesley Community Center, and METRO.

Second Ward

Houston Launches Second Ward Community Revitalization : On July 25, Mayor Sylvester Turner and Rebuilding Together Houston kicked off a fundraising campaign to repair up to 100 homes in Second Ward. 

Qualifying homeowners can apply for roof repairs, home leveling, interior safety upgrades, and exterior repairs. Donors and volunteers are needed to make this vision a reality. Visit Rebuilding Together Houston's website  for more information on donating, volunteering, or applying to receive repairs. Rehabilitating single-family homes is a high priority project in the Second Ward Complete Communities Action Plan. A huge thanks to Rebuilding Together Houston and their partners!


Friends of Eastwood Park:  Residents in Second Ward identified improving Eastwood Park as a high priority during Complete Communities planning. Several of these residents were part of the skateboarding community at Eastwood Park, and have formed the group Friends of Eastwood Park to advocate for improvements to the skate park and surrounding park. The group has been assisted for more than six months by BakerRipley and Lone Star Legal Aid and is now a non-profit organization. Congratulations to the Friends of Eastwood Park! Mayor Sylvester Turner at the Worthing Feeder Pattern Back-to-School Parade

Worthing Feeder Pattern Back-to-School Parade & Community Fair:  
A Family Fun Day and Parade was held within the Worthing feeder pattern on Saturday, August 17. The Community Fair included moonwalks, snow cones, popcorn, free immunizations, uniforms, school supplies, and more. Mayor Turner participated in the parade that began and ended at Worthing High School.


The Official Sunnyside Historic Community: Our meetings are held every second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm, at the Houston Police Department storefront at 3511 Reed Rd., 77051.

You can request a ceremonial certificate recognizing significant work in the community through the Mayor's Office.

Submit a summary about the individual to be honored with highlights of his/her accomplishments, involvement in the community, the date of recognition, and type of event planned. More information about ceremonial certificates is here.
