 The Empty Shelter Project: The Empty Shelter Project will offer free pet spaying and neutering at the Alief Community Center, 11903 Bellaire Blvd., 77072, on August 24. Over 450 dog and cat spay/and neuter surgeries are anticipated. Each animal also receives free vaccinations and a microchip.

International Management District Livable Centers Planning Study: A Livable Centers presentation will be held on Friday, August 23. A report on the planning study will be given from 6 - 9 pm at
Youngblood Intermediate School, 8410 Dairy View Lane, 77072 and at the SPARK Park and Nature Center, 6 - 9 pm.
The study seeks to identify ways the District can create a more
walkable, mixed-use, transit-served neighborhood that is both a destination and a great place to live, work, and play. The Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) manages the Livable Centers Program, which is funded by federal transportation dollars. H-GAC is leading the planning study in partnership with
the International Management District.

Community involvement in crime prevention meets third Thursday of each month except in July, August, and December. The n

Gulfton Super Neighborhood Council: The Gulfton Super Neighborhood Council meetings are held every third Monday of the month. A super neighborhood meeting was held on August 12th at the Southwest Multi-Service Center, 6400 High Star Drive, from 12 - 1 pm. Opportunity Zones: The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act created an economic development tool to spur long-term investment and job creation in economically-distressed communities, through tax benefits. Northeast Houston Farmers Market Launch Celebration:
The Northeast Houston Farmer's Market was launched on Saturday, August 17, at Kashmere Gardens Elementary School, 4901 Lockwood Dr., 77026.
The grand opening featured local products, kid-friendly activities, cooking demonstrations, and more. The market will be open every two weeks.

Get Moving Farmer's Market: The Houston Health Department is holding Get Moving Houston Farmers Markets throughout the city in 2019.The market operates from 11 am - 2:30 pm. Come check out the market for healthy produce! WIC participants are eligible to sign up for a $30 voucher. Those with SNAP benefits can also participate in the Double Up Houston dollar-for-dollar match program. Details here.

Northside Back to School Health and Resource Fair:
Saturday, August 3, 8 am was an annual Back to School Health and Resource Fair with State Representative Jessica Farrar at Moody Park Community Center, 3725 Fulton Street, 77009. Free health screenings, backpacks with school supplies, Zumba and aerobic exercise demonstrations, giveaways, and prizes were available. Partners included the M.D. Anderson Family YMCA, Wesley Community Center, LISC Houston, GO Neighborhoods, Houston Parks and Recreation Department, Commissioner Adrian Garcia, State Senator Carol Alvarado, State Farm Insurance Company, BakerRipley Leonel Castillo Community Center, Wesley Community Center, and METRO.

Second Ward
Houston Launches Second Ward Community Revitalization
: On July 25, Mayor Sylvester Turner and Rebuilding Together Houston kicked off a fundraising campaign to repair up to 100 homes in Second Ward.
Qualifying homeowners can apply for roof repairs, home leveling, interior safety upgrades, and exterior repairs. Donors and volunteers are needed to make this vision a reality. Visit Rebuilding Together Houston's website
for more information on donating, volunteering, or applying to receive repairs. Rehabilitating single-family homes is a high priority project in the Second Ward Complete Communities Action Plan. A huge thanks to Rebuilding Together Houston and their partners!
Friends of Eastwood Park:
Residents in Second Ward identified improving Eastwood Park as a high priority during Complete Communities planning. Several of these residents were part of the skateboarding community at Eastwood Park, and have formed the group Friends of Eastwood Park to advocate for improvements to the skate park and surrounding park. The group has been assisted for more than six months by BakerRipley and Lone Star Legal Aid and is now a non-profit organization. Congratulations to the Friends of Eastwood Park! Mayor Sylvester Turner at the Worthing Feeder Pattern Back-to-School Parade
Worthing Feeder Pattern Back-to-School Parade & Community Fair:
A Family Fun Day and Parade was held within the Worthing feeder pattern on Saturday, August 17. The Community Fair included moonwalks, snow cones, popcorn, free immunizations, uniforms, school supplies, and more. Mayor Turner participated in the parade that began and ended at Worthing High School.

Ceremonial Certificates: Would you like to recognize an outstanding individual or organization for their contributions to, or achievements on a neighborhood project?
You can request a ceremonial certificate recognizing significant work in the community through the Mayor's Office.
Submit a summary about the individual to be honored with highlights of his/her accomplishments, involvement in the community, the date of recognition, and type of event planned. More information about ceremonial certificates is here.
