Where Does Our Water Come From?
Water is essential to all life. Everyone uses water to drink, cook, clean, and for sanitation. But where does that water come from? Well, here in Glendale, we use renewable water supplies from the Salt, Verde, and Colorado rivers, and stored water credits that are earned through the city’s recharge program. In addition, Glendale uses groundwater when needed.
Runoff from the Salt/Verde River watershed is stored in a series of lakes operated by the Salt River Project (SRP). Runoff from the Colorado River watershed is stored in Lake Powell, Lake Mead, and Lake Pleasant and delivered to Arizona through the Central Arizona Project (CAP) canal.
Glendale also cleans the city’s wastewater to A+ quality which means it is treated and disinfected until there is nothing harmful left in the water, and is then re-used to irrigate city parks, sports fields, and other landscaping; it is utilized to create lakes and wetlands; and is even put back into the ground for future use.
Here in Water Services, we strategically manage our water supplies because we know how critical it is to ensure every resident and business has access to reliable and sustainable water sources now and for years to come.

You might be surprised to know that for the cost of $1.00, it is possible to refill a 16.9 oz water bottle with tap water over 4,000 times! That's more than 500 gallons of water for the same cost as buying a bottle of water at the store.
