Selected Titles for August 2019

Welcome to the August newsletter! Like most Vietnam combat veterans, I am not one to dwell on my experiences overseas. But the arrival last week in my small town of the traveling version of the Vietnam Memorial Wall brought back a lot of memories. Fifty years ago (!!), after graduating college, and hoping to start graduate school in Berlin on a recently awarded Fulbright scholarship, I was confronted with a first draft lottery: my September birthday resulted in draft number 71. My draft notice arrived a few weeks later, with a March 11, 1970 draft date.

There was one name in particular that I wished to see: my friend Eric Kelly, whom I knew well, and who did not make it back. This was the first time I've found his name on the wall, and I took a rubbing home with me. This was important to me, and I wanted to share this with you, my good friends.

In this newsletter we have some exciting new arrivals, as well as a very strong section on stone and brick, and mid-century modern design.

Happy browsing!

[Brick]. Lacroux, J.; Detain, C. (text). La Brique Ordinaire Au Point de Vue Decoratif, 1re Serie. Paris: Ducher et Cie, 1878. First edition. Folio, pp. 43 of text (in French) with b/w line drawings,  plus 75 full page chromolithographic plates. Bound in modern red half leather with marbled boards, gilt title on spine.. Good; spine starting to split; gouge to front cover; missing a cloth tie; text leaves a bit spotted and dust soiled, colour plates very fine.

Very scarce and beautiful collection of brickwork and details of  French buildings with polychromatic brick facades, all gorgeously rendered. The chromolithiographic plates were lithographed by Daumont and printed by Monrocq. They illustrate various ways to use brick as a decorative element in building constructions, also chimneys, pillars, enclosure walls, gates, etc. Many examples of complete buildings are depicted, some with ground floors and cross-sections. Some architects represented are: Ed. Guillaume, Gabriel Davioud, Duvillers, Delarue, Galand, A. Feine, Eug. Le Maire. The text by G. Detain gives, apart from the technical descriptions, also a historical survey of the brick as building element and a survey of the different types of brick. One of the most attractive portfolios of brickwork we've ever seen! A great collection of architectural art. (19606)    $650.00

Living on the Level
Wills, Royal Barry
[Pattern Book]. Wills, Royal Barry. Living on the Level One-Story Houses by America's best liked architect. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1954. First edition. Quarto, pp. viii, 120, richly illustrated from drawings and plans (many in two colors) for houses designed by the author. Chapters include: Getting a Lot for Your Money, How to Analyze Your Needs, Money Savers and Ideas, How to Build a House for $5,000. Original Wraps. Very good.

The ranch house Bible! One-story living was enormously popular in the mid-1950s, partly because the house was safer and more flexible and easier on the joints if stairs weren't necessary. The author went on to point out that shorter plumbing line and heating ducts, shorter chimneys and sidewalls, the lack of staging during construction all make the costs lower. The ease in making home repairs and painting (no high ladders!), and no noise overhead from people moving around upstairs, also made for persuasive arguments for living in a one-story home. The designs are classic 1950s, typically 1000-1400 sq ft, but there are a few larger homes in the 2000-3000 sq ft category too. (19567)    $30.00

Bingham, Neil and Andrew Weaving

This book begins with a lively decade-by-decade introduction to the key design innovations of the mid-twentieth century, illustrated with archive material. International design developments are studied within the context of world events and how they influenced design - the rise of modernism in the interwar period, postwar austerity and boom, the space race, flower power, and the energy crisis of the 1970s - providing a fascinating insight into this fertile design period. The second part of the book explores the many elements of the style: furniture, lighting textiles and rugs, ceramics, and glassware. The third part of the book shows how to combine these elements to create a stylish home that takes inspiration from the very best of twentieth-century design. (13421)    $20.00

Building homes for the working class, at rents that they could afford despite the rise in construction costs, was a challenge for large cities at the turn of the 20th century. The urban districts were crowded and affordable housing was scarce. In this book, the idea of building cottages that would house one or two families in suburban districts was considered more favorable than building more tenement housing in the central district of large towns, and it was assumed that travel options for the working class to get to their workplaces would improve because of increased demand. This book presents plans for thirty cottages intended for working class homes in suburban areas. (19455)    $130.00
