Milly Sawyers' Freedom Suit
New Annual MoCLE Requirement - Free Program
In 1833 Greene County was founded and one of the first orders of business was to establish a Circuit Court. There was no courthouse so proceedings were held in log cabins and homes. That is the backdrop for the long-forgotten story of a black woman named Milly Sawyers. In 1834, Sawyers filed suit in Greene County for her freedom. And she won. This program concludes with a panel discussion including Chief Justice George Draper and the Honorable Patricia Breckenridge from the Supreme Court of Missouri. More about this free event and the new annual MCLE requirement at this link.
