Worship and Communication - Rev Dr Scott M Kenefake
This Sunday, August 25th :
Isaiah 58:9b-14 ; Luke 13:10-17
“Sabbath in a 24/7 World”

There has been much discussion in the congregation over the summer months about the need for the church to develop a more comprehensive communications strategy (both internally and externally). The link below explains “why” and “how.”
Blessing of the Backpacks
All children and youth (preschool through 12th grade) are invited to bring their backpacks and join us for a blessing this Sunday, August 25th during our worship service! As your child prepares to start school, First Presbyterian Church wants to support them as they begin a new year. As we pray for their education and all school year activities, backpacks will be blessed and they will receive a reminder that God is with them - wherever they are!

First Presbyterian's Cub Scout Pack 3 Open House
Pack 3, First Presbyterian's Cub Scout Pack, has been re-established and will be hosting an open house on Tuesday, September 3rd.

Pack 3 will be re-starting with Lion and Tiger Cub dens. As such, rising kindergarten and first-graders and their parents are invited to join our Pack 3 Leaders and Scouts at 6 p.m. in the Youth Room (Third Floor of the Will Young Building) to talk about this year's cub scouting program.

This program is open to member and non-member families, so please spread the word! Contact Chip Clark with any questions (704-791-2511).
Rally Day
Mark your calendars for Rally Day on September 8th! Come celebrate with your church family as we kick off the Fall season! As our Fall programming returns, all ages are invited to gather over a delicious breakfast at 9:45 a.m. in Davis Hall to learn about all the educational and faith building opportunities you can experience during the Sunday School hour. The celebration will continue as we worship together at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary. As we fellowship, we will look forward to the ways that we will faithfully live, serve, worship, and learn as neighbors together.
First Youth Fellowship Kickoff
All youth (6th-12th grade) and their parents or caregivers are invited to First Youth Fellowship on September 8, 5-7 p.m. Come to Davis Hall ready to play, engage, and connect as we learn what this year has in store for us. During this combined time, we will share a meal together and jump into Youth Fellowship! Along with fun, this will be a time where we cover important information and forms for Youth Fellowship. At least one parent or caregiver should accompany your youth. Have questions? Contact Rachel!
Also, to get a head start on staying in the Youth News loop, parents and youth can sign up here to receive the Youth Newsletter for detailed information about all events related to youth fellowship.
Atrium Health Chaplain Residents Come Full Circle…..
Atrium Health Cabarrus Chaplain Residents have completed three units of Clinical Pastoral Education over the course of the last academic year (400+ hours). This post-graduate training program equips them to apply to become Board Certified Chaplains if they choose, or to hone their spiritual care skills for other ministries and vocations to which they feel called, such as hospice chaplaincy, pastoral counseling preparation and specialized ministry. Last Thursday, five members of the 2018-2019 cohort completed their culminating educational day of the year by holding “finals” reflective conversations in the Commons. Rev. Lisa Jeffcoat oversaw the day and wrote, “We are so grateful to First Presbyterian Church for such a beautiful gift to this community; holding this special day in this sacred space is an experience we will always remember.”

This ‘full circle’ story is a reminder that the Atrium Health Cabarrus Chaplain Residency Program was endowed by Phyl Coltrane as a memorial to her husband Bub. A plaque honoring that bequest can be seen in the chapel on the second floor of Atrium Cabarrus. So from a beloved First Presbyterian couple, dozens of chaplains have been prepared. Last Thursday represented the first time their final exam was held at First Presbyterian.
Session Highlights from the August 13, 2019 Meeting
After a brief summer break, the Session held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at 7:00pm.
The Treasurer/Finance Committee reported that receipts and disbursements are inline with the budget and that during the first half of this year investments have rebounded positively from the losses that occurred in the latter part of 2018. The Session approved the 2019-2020 Budget of First Kids Preschool at $270,026.
 The Session approved the following as the first steps toward addressing the need for a communications coordinator:
1.      To bring in a consultant to study the church finances, allocation of resources and staffing;
2.      To enter into a contract with a 3 rd party firm for a period of at least 3 months to carry out communications/social media functions;
3.      To hire a part-time Communications Coordinator once the consultant study is completed, and finally;
4.      To appoint a joint committee to facilitate the above actions.
Some exciting changes are in the planning stages for Christian Education & Sunday School this fall with an emphasis on intergenerational ministry! The Christian Education Committee is working hard to secure teachers, plan Rally Day for Sept. 8, and improve technology in our classrooms and buildings. Connect with Nathan Woolwine to let him know you want to join these efforts!
 The Deacons are hard at work planning Wednesday Night Fellowship beginning Sept. 12, a potluck lunch on Sept. 22, a picnic on the lawn on Dedication Sunday, a church retreat in the spring, and ongoing congregational care and mission work.
  The Session was updated on progress toward the requirements to be met before we select our Senior Pastor Nominating Committee. The Presbytery Committee on Ministry must approve our moving forward.

The Session meets monthly on the 2 nd Tuesday at 7:00 pm. Minutes are open and available by request after they are approved at the following month’s Session meeting.
