Warbles from your Senior Warden

Sorry I missed being with you last Sunday.  My "new normal" requires me to get up every 2 hours during the night.  Sometimes I just do not get enough sleep. That was the case last week. I certainly hope to see you next Sunday!

This is a hot week.  That requires me to keep my doors and windows shut for most of the day and run my air conditioner.  But I really miss the birdsong and other noises and sights of nature.

I was remembering my father recently.  He passed in the early 80's. He has a similar medical situation as I do now.  Sure wish I could ask him questions! I can no longer go swimming but the pool area here where I live has a lot of swallowtail butterflies.  I am now tempted to just go and sit by the pool so that I can see them. I have always loved them and my father gave me a gift when I was a teen.

He gave me a swallowtail butterfly in a frame.  I was horrified. I cannot imagine how I must have hurt his feelings.  He was gifting me something that he knew that I loved. Thinking back, I should have been really impressed that he knew and actually recognized this.  I could not even look at the framed butterfly. Did he find it already deceased? I was a typical teen in that I could not see the effort that he was making to give me what he thought would be the perfect gift.

Now I think of him whenever I see a swallowtail butterfly.  I think of him with joy and gratitude and love. I wish I could thank him for the gift, no matter how he put it together.  It was probably the most thoughtful and personal gift that I ever received.

Is there something that triggers memories of loved ones who have passed for you?  It is such a gift from God. What a blessing to find these clues on any day. Rain or shine.  Warm or cool. Just a spontaneous and unexpected gift. We are all so truly blessed!

Many blessings dear family,
Edy

On August 20 th , 1619 the first slave ship was brought to the Royal Virginia Company colony at Jamestown where African slaves were put up for sale. Jamestown was an Anglican settlement.  The vigil will take place at Holy Family Church, 5038 Hyland Ave., San Jose at 7pm.

Diocesan Conference on a Spiritual Response to Climate Change
How can we best respond to the crisis facing life on the planet-our island home? On Saturday, September 14, please join us at St. Paul's/San Pablo Episcopal Church in Salinas for a conference on the stewardship of creation at a time of climate change (9:30 am-3:00pm). Participants will receive information on the latest scientific understandings of the causes and effects of global warming, will explore how caring for the Earth is an integral part of living as the Jesus Movement, and will leave with practical tools to put their care into action.  Together, we can do more as a body than any of us can do alone. To register, copy and paste this website into your browser.  Be sure to register for the Conference (not the retreat)

 Your Vestry Update

During your vestry meeting we discussed the two new doors that have been ordered to replace the outside doors to the men's and women's bathrooms.  They should be in around the first of September to be installed.

Most of our time was spent discussing the golf tournament and how to earn more revenue.  Some items that have already been donated are: 4 VIP general admission guest passes to the Legion of Honor/de Young museum, 4 tickets to the California Academy of Science, family four pack to the Children's Discovery Museum, 4 two hour sewing classes with Rowena, 3 months try out with the Stingrays swim team, a kayaking lesson/outing including lunch on the water. You get the picture.

Another thing we will be trying is a pie auction.  We will have hopefully a dozen homemade pies (so far we have a coconut cream, a key lime, a coffee cream and a few others).

Say your table wants the key lime pie.  Everyone at the table puts in $5 for a total of $40.  But the table next you also wants that pie. They will have to bid more for it.  So bring some cash. Just say'n.

We need you to take a golf tournament letter to places that you visit and ask for a donation.  So far everyone I have asked have said "Yes!"

I have letters to give you to help with this endeavor.

Don't forget, you can always ask someone to dinner.

We are in need of ushers, lectors, Lay Eucharistic Ministers, and Altar Guild members.  These are wonderful ministry opportunities for both extraverts and introverts, male and female, young and not as young as they used to be, and all who seek to serve God and God's church. Please prayerfully consider joining one of these ministries!  See Rev. Karen or Susan Zaballos if you are interested in learning more.

Food for thought. . .

Because our Star Word is 'Truth':

From the cowardice that dare not face new truth,

From the laziness that is contented with half truth,

From the arrogance that thinks it knows all truth,

Good Lord, deliver us.

NEEDING PRAYER SUPPORT?

Prayer is one of those things we often think about, might feel inadequate about, believe in but might be unsure how to proceed.  How we pray is sometimes unique to each of us.  The Church provides help in many ways.  If you find yourself in need, of any kind (emotional, physical, spiritual, guidance, etc) consider how St. Stephen's can support you:

*    there is a Biddings book at the back of the sanctuary where you can write in things before the service starts

*    there is a prayer chain of committed pray-ers (who maintain confidentiality).  Contact Robin, our Deacon, who will initiate that for you

*    there is prayer at the altar every Sunday, where we all join you in the privacy of your need with the Priest

*    there is a kneeling prayer station at the side of the church with candles, prayer book, all available anytime, not just Sundays

*    turn to your neighbors and friends in church to share what's on your heart, ask for support in speaking to God about your needs (and tell them the updates next week!)

*    tell people about your answers to prayer!  and the miracles you witness, or how prayer changes YOU.
