City of Westland To Rename Golf Course In Honor of Longtime Resident/Employee


Westland, MI (August 21, 2019) - Mayor William R. Wild will host the Westland Municipal Golf Course Dedication Ceremony on behalf of the City of Westland to honor Mack Mayfield on Friday, August 23.
 
 Mayfield, along with his wife Bertha, has lived in the City of Westland since 1957. He began working with the City of Westland in the Water and Sewer Department where he rose to the rank of Superintendent, the first African-American to serve in a supervisory role in Westland's history.  Mayfield served alongside members of the community and government to improve Westland and surrounding communities through volunteer service throughout his career and after his retirement, receiving numerous awards for his commitment to promoting diversity, inclusivity and ensuring the well-being of all Westland residents.

Participants are asked to gather at the Westland Municipal Golf Course, located at 500 Merriman Rd., for the event. The Dedication Ceremony, which will begin at 1:00 p.m., will include remarks by Mayor Wild and other special guests.
 
"I am honored to dedicate the Westland Municipal Golf Course on behalf of the City of Westland as the Mack Mayfield Municipal Golf Course in recognition of his over 60 years of dedication to the City of Westland," commented Mayor William R. Wild. "As an employee, Mack Mayfield broke the color barrier and rose to the rank of Superintendent through talent, determination & leadership.  As a resident, Mack has set the standard for integrity, family values and community spirit."
