Our Vision Statement: A community living and growing in unity with God and all people through Christ.

Our Mission Statement: To seek God in reverent worship, service to neighbors, gracious hospitality, and the pursuit of wisdom.
A Note from Rev. Teri

Dear All Saints',

First, I'd like to thank you all for the wonderful celebration this past Sunday as I officially became the eighth rector of All Saints'. I am grateful for all the work and preparation that went into such a special day. Thank you! I am so excited about the shared ministry that lies ahead of us!

Second, Melissa Simpson has begun her work as The Director of Formation for Children, Youth, and Young Adults. We are happy to have her on staff. In past conversations about the future of our parish, members have identified the growth of families and young adults in our congregation as one of our priorities. Michaelene, our recent curate, focused her ministry in this area. We are so fortunate that, as Michaelene departed for a new job, Melissa was able to step seamlessly into that ministry, allowing us to transition without losing momentum in newly-formed ministries such as the Episcopal Youth Community and At the Table College Ministry.

Some of you have asked about the funding for Melissa's position. As part of our capital campaign, money was allocated to pay for a family ministry position for two years. This money provided our half of Michaelene's compensation this past year (the diocese paying for the other half of a curate's compensation). We still have money allocated for this ministry remaining, and these remaining funds will cover almost all of Melissa's salary for the coming year.

Moreover, we are lucky to have devoted volunteers -- Sherrie Cotton and KaDee McCormick -- who spend hours each week in our office. Sherrie is currently doing the work of administrative assistant as a volunteer. Also, please remember that I am being paid for a three-quarter time position, saving the church more than $30,000/year over what had been paid previously for a full-time rector's position at All Saints'.

Therefore, the total money being used for clergy and office staff compensation at this time (including Melissa's new position) is actually almost $20,000/year less than what was budgeted for clergy and office staff for the year 2017. If you have any questions, please feel free, as always, to ask me.

I'm looking forward to what God has in store for us as we seek to spread God's love in this place and our community!

Much peace,
Teri

Eva Cole's garden and Rhode Island Reds

Eva is committed to "feeding people;" and she's been doing this all summer by growing and sharing produce from her big garden. She grows the food in the garden spot on Crow Mountain that she inherited from her grandmother, Mary Cole, and has produced abundant supplies of squash, cabbage, eggplant, okra, watermelon and cantaloupe to send home with NT guests or prepare as part of the Saturday meal.

Eva also tends a flock of 16 Rhode Island Red hens ("they are the best layers") and cartons of fresh, pasture-raised eggs go out regularly with our guests. Protein-rich eggs and locally grown super-fresh produce - important nutritional offerings for our hungry neighbors!

All Saints' can be very proud of Eva, who is a senior at Pottsville High School, attends ATU, and grew up in our church.

Practicing Prayer:  Exploring and Expanding our Friendship with God

Our next meeting is August 25 at 4:30 in the Parlor.

We have chosen Paul Knitter's book:  Without Buddha I Couldn't be a Christian to read next.  Dr. Knitter was Catholic Priest and scholar; he taught at Xavier University before leaving the priesthood.  Most recently he retired from his position as Paul Tillich Professor of Theology, World Religions and Culture at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, where he continues as Emeritus Professor.  You can find a number of YouTube videos about his work; an interesting and brief one of Richard Rohr discussing this book is available at  https://youtu.be/TZS9bvxVp6Y

Please join us on August 25 at 4:30-5:30 in the Parlor.  We will pray in silence for 20 minutes and then begin our discussion of Without Buddha I Couldn't be a Christian.  Please come even if you have not yet read this. All are welcome.

News from Loaves and Fishes and Neighbors Table

Thanks to the members and friends of All Saints' Parish our Neighbors Table guests are receiving generous gifts of much appreciated personal care items. On Saturday, August 24, Phala Anderson and Mercedes Moss will distribute laundry detergent plus bags containing shampoo and conditioner, hand soap, deodorant, and toilet paper. These gifts were deposited in the red wagon and delivered to our altar to be blessed with the offertory during Sunday services in July and early August.

This past Saturday our guests received fresh fruit, courtesy of Don and Myra Turnipseed and Nora Judd of the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Aspen Lane in north Russellville. Bunches of grapes (green and purple) and bags of plumquats, all from the Food Bank in Fort Smith, were delivered to us in Russellville by way of the Adventist Church in Clarksville. This cooperative chain of food for the hungry will continue, and supplies are already in hand for green salads, eggplant parmesan, roasted sweet and Irish potatoes, and even fresh coconuts (perfect for the NT Luau set for Labor Day weekend!).

Readings For the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

The First Reading                                           Isaiah 58:9b-14

If you remove the yoke from among you,
the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil,
if you offer your food to the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the afflicted,
then your light shall rise in the darkness
and your gloom be like the noonday.
The  Lord will guide you continually,
and satisfy your needs in parched places,
and make your bones strong;
and you shall be like a watered garden,
like a spring of water,
whose waters never fail.
Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;
you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
you shall be called the repairer of the breach,
the restorer of streets to live in.
If you refrain from trampling the sabbath,
from pursuing your own interests on my holy day;
if you call the sabbath a delight
and the holy day of the  Lord honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
serving your own interests, or pursuing your own affairs;
then you shall take delight in the  Lord,
and I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth;
I will feed you with the heritage of your ances

Psalm 103:1-8

Bless the  Lord, O my soul, *
and all that is within me, bless his holy Name.
2 Bless the  Lord, O my soul, *
and forget not all his benefits.
3 He forgives all your sins *
and heals all your infirmities;
4 He redeems your life from the grave *
and crowns you with mercy and loving-kindness;
5 He satisfies you with good things, *
and your youth is renewed like an eagle's.
6 The  Lord executes righteousness *
and judgment for all who are oppressed.
7 He made his ways known to Moses *
and his works to the children of Israel.
8 The  Lord is full of compassion and mercy, *
slow to anger and of great kindness.

The Second Reading                              Hebrews 12:18-29

You have not come to something that can be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that not another word be spoken to them. (For they could not endure the order that was given, "If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned to death." Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, "I tremble with fear.") But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
See that you do not refuse the one who is speaking; for if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject the one who warns from heaven! At that time his voice shook the earth; but now he has promised, "Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heaven." This phrase, "Yet once more," indicates the removal of what is shaken-- that is, created things-- so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; for indeed our God is a consuming fire.
g its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

The Gospel                                                        Luke 13:10-17

Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, "Woman, you are set free from your ailment." When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day." But the Lord answered him and said, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?" When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.
