News From St. Sarkis Church

Sunday, February 9, 2020, was a joyous day for the community of St. Sarkis Church. Festivities for the name day of the patron saint of the church started with Divine liturgy celebrated and a homily delivered by His Eminence Archbishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Prelate. Serpazan preached on the virtues of St. Sarkis; faith, courage, and self-sacrifice. He appealed to the congregation to meditate on and learn from the life of St. Sarkis.

Badarak was concluded with the ceremony of consecrating the icon of Saints Vartanants. This latest addition to the icons of our church, by artist Rudik Petrossian, is sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Karnig & Alice Alajajian.

Church services were followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the renovated main hall of the church and a celebratory banquet hosted by the Ladies Guild of St. Sarkis Church. Mr. Simon Bardizbanian, a member of the Board of Trustees was the master of ceremonies for the day who welcomed everyone and introduced the program. Ms. Karina Vartanian, young talent in the community and a  member of St. Sarkis Church Salt & Light Youth group was the main performer of the day who presented an anthology of Armenian and international songs and received the warm and heartfelt appreciation of the audience. Violinist Mr. Arsen Gedikian also performed.

Mr. Harry Seoylemezian, Chairman of the BOT and Fr. Nareg Terterian, the pastor made their remarks respectively. Mr. Seoylemezian thanked everyone for being part of our parish and invited all to be part of the new and ongoing activities of the church such as the Bible Study course and the newly formed dance classes. He also spoke about the 30th anniversary of the New St. Sarkis Church in Douglaston and the celebration banquet scheduled for May 31, 2020, in East Northport, NY.

Fr. Nareg thanked the ladies guild for organizing the banquet, and he recognized Mr. & Mrs. Karnig Alajajian as the benefactors for the new icon in the sanctuary. He also thanked each and every member of the Board of Trustees for the hard work and dedication in planning and executing a major renovation of the facilities of the church that included the main hall, Pagoumian hall and the classrooms. He singled out the extraordinary devotion of Mr. Karnik Minassian, who spearheaded this much-needed project. Then the pastor invited the Prelate to recognize Mr. Minassian with a certificate of honor. Mr. Minassian thanked Serpazan for the honor bestowed on him. He explained that his dedication to this church came from the fact that his late mother adored this church and that his 2 young sons grew up here.

The event was concluded with our prelate Archbishop Anoushavan Tanielian's encouraging remarks to continue the mission of Armenian-Christian faith in the community of St. Sarkis.

Celebrating 30 years at St. Sarkis Church
This year marks the 30th Anniversary of St Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church in Douglaston. Each week we will be highlighting an event from the past thirty years. We hope you enjoy reminiscing!

This Week We Honor: Mr. & Mrs. Arthur and Lilian Hairabedian

Mr. & Mrs. Arthur and Lilian Hairabedian are among the very few who are still active members of St. Sarkis Church since its inception in the early 1960s. Mr. Hairabedian played a key role as Chairman of the Consecration Committee in charge of overseeing all the necessary preparations for this auspicious event which took place in May 1962. Afterwards, Mr. Hairabedian was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees and served with great dedication for several years until his departure for Paris, France in 1965.

Since his return from abroad, he and his family have once again become active members of St. Sarkis Church. Mr. Hairabedian has served the church as a Board of Trustees member and NRA delegate and has always been very generous with his council, time and financial assistance. His daughter Diane Boyadjian followed in his footsteps and is currently a board member.

We are excited to announce that on Sunday, May 31st , 2020 we will be celebrating the "30th Anniversary of St Sarkis Church & 15th Anniversary of Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian, as Pastor." at   Larkfield Manor, East Northport, NY.
We look forward to celebrating this joyous occasion together!

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO TITUS (1:1-11)
Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God's elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness- a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, and at his
appointed season he brought his word to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,
To Titus, my true son in our common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
The reason I left you in Crete was that you might straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless-not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach and that for the sake of dishonest gain.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (7:37-52)
On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

On hearing his words, some of the people said, "Surely this man is the Prophet." Others said, "He is the Christ." Still others asked, "How can the Christ come from Galilee? Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David's family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?" Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him in?"
"No one ever spoke the way this man does," the guards declared.
"You mean he has deceived you also?" the Pharisees retorted. "Has any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law-there is a curse on them.

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)
HOLY VOSKIAN PRIESTS
On, Thursday, February 13, the Armenian Church remembered the Voskian priests-five men who were sent to Rome as ambassadors by the Armenian king, Sanadrook. On the road to Rome they met the Apostle Thaddeus who converted and baptized them. The leader of the five was named Voski. They lived in the mountains as hermits for forty years, after which they preached to the Royal Court. They were martyred in 107 AD.

FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD (DYARNUNTARACH)
Today, Friday, February 14, the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord to the Temple (in Armenian, which means "bringing forward of the Lord"). This feast always falls on February 14-forty days after the Nativity (January 6). It commemorates the presentation of the Lord to the Temple by Mary and Joseph according to Mosaic law (see Numbers 18:15).

In the temple, a righteous and devout man named Simeon to whom it had been revealed that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord, took Jesus in his arms, blessed God and said, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." (See Luke 2:22-40)

Some pre-Christian Armenian customs have been incorporated into this feast, including one that remains popular to this day, especially in the Middle East and Armenia. In recent years the tradition has been revived here in the United States as well. On the eve of the feast, a bonfire is lit outside of the church using a flame from the altar. Young people, especially newlyweds, gather around the fire as the flames subside, the young men leap over the flames. The light of the bonfire is symbolic of Christ who is the Everlasting Life and Light of the world.

ST. SAHAG BARTEV
This Saturday, February 15, the Armenian Church commemorates Catholicos Sahag (Isaac) Bartev, a strong and great leader who is recognized as one of the greatest saints of the Armenian Church. His accomplishments, even under very difficult political situations, secured the survival of the Armenian nation.

He was the son of St. Nerses the Great and a descendant of St. Gregory the Illuminator. Orphaned at an early age, he nevertheless received an excellent literary education, especially in eastern languages. He was the one who encouraged and supported Mesrob Mashdots in the creation of the Armenian alphabet. Soon after this great event Catholicos Sahag began the first translation of the Bible and he led and guided the vast body of works that were translated into Armenian, thus creating Armenia's "Golden Age of Literature." He was an ardent believer in education and ecclesiastical discipline and canon law. He is recognized as the one who kept Armenia ecclesiastically and nationally autonomous.

St. Sahag is believed to have died in 437 at an advanced age of 89 (some sources claim older). With the death of Catholicos Sahag Bartev the line of St. Gregory the Illuminator came to an end.

STS. GHEVONT AND PRIESTS

This Tuesday, February 18, the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Holy Ghevontian (Leontine) priests. After the battle of Vartanantz, a number of priests and deacons were abducted by the Persian king and imprisoned, tortured and martyred. Ghevont is revered as the leader of the group because he was an advisor to Vartan Mamigonian, and is remembered for the inspiring message he delivered on the eve of the battle of Avarayr. Ghevont, who was highly educated, assisted Sahag and Mesrob in translating the Bible into Armenian.

The Ghevontian Fathers, martyred in 454 are: Catholicos Hovsep; Bishops Sahag and Tatig; Priests Ghevont, Moushegh, Arshen, Manuel, Abraham, and Khoren; Deacons Kachach and Abraham.

In conjunction with the Ghevontiants commemoration, Prelacy parishes will observe a special requiem service this Sunday, February 16, in memory of the deceased clergy who served the Prelacy. Remembered with gratitude and honor:
